The Wind Ensemble is our most advanced performing group and represents the highest level of musical achievement in the Barwise Band program. Placement is determined through an audition process at the end of the school year and is based on tone quality, technical ability, musical expression, and overall preparation. Students in this ensemble are expected to demonstrate a high level of responsibility, leadership, and commitment to personal and group excellence. The Wind Ensemble performs at concerts, contests, and other special events throughout the year.
The Symphonic Band is an intermediate-level ensemble for students who demonstrate developing musical skills and are ready for more advanced performance opportunities. Placement is determined by audition. Members of the Symphonic Band continue to build upon fundamental skills while preparing music of increasing complexity. This ensemble performs at concerts, contests, and other special events throughout the year.
The Concert Band is designed for students in 7th and 8th grade who are new to the band program or are still developing fundamental playing skills and would benefit from an additional year in a non-competitive ensemble setting. The Concert Band focuses on reinforcing strong foundational techniques, music literacy, and ensemble skills in a supportive and structured environment. Students will perform in concerts and continue preparing for advancement within the band program.
The Beginner Band is for 6th grade students who are learning to play a band instrument for the first time. Students are grouped into classes by like-instruments (such as all trumpets or all flutes) to ensure focused instruction on fundamentals, proper technique, and music reading. These classes combine toward the end of each semester to rehearse and perform as a full ensemble. No prior musical experience is necessary.
