In Bend 1 of our “Tapping the Power of Nonfiction Unit,” students will be reading in book clubs, reading with fascination and wonder. Similar to our other units, we will launch the work with a read-aloud where we teach the major work on the bend. We are currently using the text Chew on This, which examines the way fast food has altered life in America, from health to food production to the poverty gap.
In book clubs, students will meet daily to discuss their club book and their thinking associated with this text. Students will learn the importance of coming to book clubs prepared with annotation and possible discussion points. They will be completing this work on a shared Google Slide show.
Reading & Lexia Log
Students have an online reading log to track their reading at home. This is found on Reading Google Classroom as an assignment.
Students log their daily schoolwork reading everyday and are expected to read at least 80 minutes a week at home. Reading logs are used in goal setting and to help students notice their trends as readers and help them grow.
Students also use Lexia Power Up online to boost reading skills in the areas of word study, grammar, and comprehension. Students track their progress daily and have a minimum expectation each week while using the program.
