My name is Jennifer Cook. This is my 24th year teaching physical education at the Sheehan School.I grew up in Wrentham, Massachusetts and attended King PhilipRegional High School. In May of 2008 I received a Master of Science in Physical Education with a concentration in Sport and Human Performance. I have enjoyed all of my years at Sheehan and am looking forward to a great 2024-25 school year! I love physical activity and have explored various movement opportunities such as dance, gymnastics, snowboarding, track and field, and skydiving. My favorite sport is soccer.
How often do your children have physical education class?
Kindergarten and first grade currently have physical education twice a week for 45 minutes.Second, third, fourth, and fifth grades have it once a week for 45 minutes.
What do your children do in physical education?
The elementary physical education curriculum provides developmentally appropriate concepts and skills that include these five main areas.
1. Educational Games: Students learn the basic game skills of throwing, catching, and dribbling, as well as game strategies such as offense and defense.
2. Educational Dance: Students learn movement concepts such as body shapes, symmetry, asymmetry, mirroring, and matching to create their own dances alone and with a partner. Fifth grade learns how to swing dance and shares with parents and Kindergarten buddies at the end of the unit.
3. Educational Gymnastics: Students learn basic gymnastic skills such as rolling, traveling, and balancing. They use these skills to create gymnastic sentences (routines) that they share in class.
4. Educational Fitness:Students learn about the four components of fitness (cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility) and how they apply to all physical activities.
5. Social and Cooperative Skills:These are skills that include safe practices, problem solving, and teamwork.
These five areas contribute to the physical health and well being of the child. We strive to have all children active, involved, learning, and having fun!
