Unit 7

Nervous System

Goals: By the end of this unit, you'll be able to...

  • ...use the neuron as our example of a somatic cell and explain how the cell membrane is so important to this type of cell and all cells

  • ...identify the structures and functions within a cell membrane including phospholipids, channel proteins, concentration gradients, thresholds

  • ...identify key cell processes that will be important throughout the various systems (i.e. exocytosis, binding sites)

  • ...explain neural structure from dendrite to axon to synapse

  • ...differentiate between electrical and chemical signals as well as components to help with signal transmission (threshold, action potential, myelination, uptake)

  • ...apply your understanding of root words to decode and demystify much of the vocab from this class

Essential Questions:

  • What are the parts of the human brain and how do they contribute to us as individuals?

  • How do our nerves contribute to homeostasis?

  • How do the structures of neurons contribute to their functions?

  • L1: What is happening on a cellular through a molecular level that makes an action potential possible?
