ORC Jim McMahon Open Track Meet
The Jim McMahon Open Track Meet was organized in 2018 as a way to pay tribute to one of the founding members of the Omaha Running Club and former longtime Midland Lutheran College cross country and track coach, Jim McMahon. McMahon was an athlete, graduate assistant and then coached at the University of Nebraska- Omaha before taking over at Midland, where he would spend nearly 40 years as an instructor and coach. During his tenure at Midland, he coached the women’s indoor team to the 1989 NAIA National Championship. While he was at UNO, McMahon formed the Elmwood Park Striders with two other runners - this would later become the Omaha Running Club. He was inducted into the Midland University Hall of Fame, as well as the NAIA Track and Field Hall of Fame. In 2013, McMahon was inducted into the Omaha Running Club Hall of Fame as one of the pioneers of organized running in our city. In 2006, McMahon was diagnosed with cancer and until that point in his life had ran everyday. Sadly, McMahon passed away in 2016.
