Grades TK-2

Lesson 1: Before we get started...

Before we get started we need to learn a little bit about holding a pencil. While this may sound silly, believe it or not this is the first obstacle everyone faces when they start to practice drawing. Watch the video below and practice using different ways to hold your pencil and using different parts of your arm to draw lines.

Materials:

Pencil

Eraser

3 pieces of drawing paper

Assignment:

First on a piece of paper practice making lines and shapes while experimenting with different ways to hold your pencil. You can pause the video to see some different ideas that may work for you. Remember, trying anything new can feel strange, so try to have fun and see what you can do!

Next, on a second paper try holding your pencil and moving your wrist to make lines and shapes without moving your fingers. Remember to think while your draw:, what seems easier, and what seems harder to do by only using your wrist for drawing.

Finally, on your last piece of paper try holding your pencil and moving your elbow to make lines and shapes without moving your fingers and your wrist.

Drawing fact: There is no such thing as perfect art! Everyone makes mistakes, so try not to think about being a perfect artist but instead try to be a practiced artist.

Lesson 2: Sketching Practice

Now that we have learned a little bit about the difference in using our pencils for drawing instead of writing, the first skill every artist needs to practice is sketching. Below you will find a brief video explaining what sketching is, and how it can be a useful tool for any artist!

Materials:

Pencil

Eraser

1 piece of drawing paper

Assignment:

We are going to be practicing sketching to help us make a drawing, using a character you may have seen before...

Plankton!

Demonstration:

You can follow along with me during the demonstration, and together we can begin practicing learning how to sketch! Feel free to pause or re-watch the video at any point if you get stuck. Remember, we are just practicing so have fun and enjoy creating this great character with sketching.

Lesson 3: Creating with Sketching and imagination

This week we are going to be learning how we can take the sketching tools that we have learned and use them to create our very own cartoons! You can watch this weeks demonstration and learn how and then for your weekly Art assignment you can use the same tools and your imagination to invent your very own... shape MONSTER!

Materials:

Pencil

Eraser

1 piece of drawing paper

Assignment:

Remember, this week our assignment is to use our sketching tools to imagine and create our own shape monsters! that means that the shape monster you create will be something that has never existed before! So be sure to take your time, think carefully, and never be afraid to erase and try something new. That's one of the best things about using our sketching skills... we can try out all sorts of ideas when we sketch and can erase!

Lesson 4: Art History (The Met. Online4Kids)

This week we are going to be taking some time to explore a little bit of art from the past by accessing the Metropolitan Museum of Arts OnlineKids website. Art is an excellent way to connect us to history because it shows us what people from different cultures and from different points in time found to be beautiful, important, or worth remembering. In this weeks lesson, our goal is NOT to try and overload ourselves with information or detailed facts. Our real goal is to explore and see if, with a little searching, we can find Artwork that makes us stop and want to take a second look. As you explore the artwork online try to think about the experience like a normal walk through a museum. This means that some of the Artwork you will go right past (THAT IS OK!!!) and others may stop you in your tracks. These are the works of Art you should try to take a few moments to learn about. While you can explore the museum however you'd like, I ask that you check out the "Time Machine" tab at the top of the page to try and search for artwork to use with this weeks assignment.

*Teacher/Parental Attention!*

Before proceeding with this weeks lesson, please be advised that the link below directs the students to tour a museum of Artwork from across the world. Because of this there may be some works of Art in the online tour that some may be uncomfortable with as there are depictions of different mythology and religions. I have the upmost respect for every parent/ guardian's rights in overseeing such matters and as such I would advise parental over site during this specific lesson if there is any personal concern. To be clear, while this site and its contents are curated specifically for kids, please keep in mind that everyone has their own perception of what is appropriate for their individual child, and f there is any trepidation on your part as a parent/ guardian/ Grade level teacher, please feel free to preview the site beforehand and opt out of the lesson if deemed necessary.

Materials:

Whatever you think will work best for your chosen recreation!

Assignment:

The assignment this week is to explore the Met4Kids Online tour and find Artwork that inspires you. You can find thousands of incredible works of Art from across the world in the "Time Machine" section and learn all about the history and the background of the artists. Find at least one artwork that you think is most interesting and use whatever materials you'd like to try and recreate the same work on your own! Your recreation does NOT have to be exact, in other words you can add your own personal version of the work, so feel free to put your own spin on the artwork if it inspires you in a fun and interesting way. Take your time soaking up all the incredible artwork and have fun!

Lesson 5: Animation (with Flip books)

This week we will learn about animation by creating a flip book! Animations are an incredible type of artwork where storytelling and visual art come together to create something incredible. First we will learn what an animation actually is, how it is made, and finally we will see a demonstration that will show us how to actually create an animation at home.

Animation: Drawings or photographs shown quickly one after another to create the appearance of movement.

Materials:

Pencil

Eraser

Sticky-note Pad (Any size/ color)

Tape

Assignment:

The assignment this week is to create our own flip book animations. You can follow along with the demonstration above to create the same animation in the video, or you can chose to make your own. Remember as you draw, that anything the DOES NOT move in your flip book will need to be drawn again on each page. You should also keep in mind that you should be able to SEE your previous drawing through your paper to help figure out things like size and where to put the next drawing. Also, if your drawings are TO FAR apart they will look like they will start to look like they are jumping from place to place instead of moving. It takes time and careful thinking to create a successful animation, so take your time, plan it out, and have fun!

Lesson 6: Shading (with Mary Doodles)

This week we will learn about shading, which is one of the most important tools for an artist when making realistic drawings. Shading is all about learning how to use your pencil to create lighter and darker tones, and is a necessary skill to have for more advanced drawings. For this weeks lesson we will be following along with a video from the channel (Mary Doodles) which is an incredible resource for all sorts of great projects.

Materials:

Pencil

Eraser

Paper

Assignment:

The assignment this week is to create at least TWO different 5 square value scales (shady bars). One will need to be made using standard shading (grey-black tones made with the side of your pencil and pressure control) to make the shady bar, and for the other you can select one of the several different methods covered in the video;

Hatching (using more/less lines)

Cross-Hatching (using more/less criss-crossed lines)

Stippling using more/less dots)

Smudging (standard shading with the extra step of using a finger to smooth out the pencil marks).

If you would like, you can always chose to try all of them, and see which one you like the best for your own drawings! Be sure to practice your shading, because next week we will be taking on a realistic drawing! Good luck, and have fun!

Lesson 7: Realistic drawing (Understanding shading and light)

This week we will learn how to use light and shading to make realistic drawings. For this lesson, there will be a short introduction video explaining our thinking and setting goals for the assignment, followed by a demonstration video to follow along with after that. It is important to remember that this is a more advanced type of artwork and will be a real challenge for most young art students.

Materials:

Pencil

Eraser

Paper

*(optional) Baseball/ Ball of your own to try on your own.

Assignment:

The assignment this week is to create a realistic drawing of a sphere. This can be done by following along with the demonstration video in the lesson, or on your own using a real baseball (or any other type of ball) at home. The goal is to try and see the shadows and understand how they work based on what we are seeing. Remember that our art class is about learning and growing our art skills with practice. Our goal is always “practicing not perfection!”

Lesson 8: Paper Sculpture (3D Art)

This week we will be experimenting with anew type of art by creating pop up paper sculptures! A sculpture is artwork that is not made on a flat piece of paper, but is made by using our hands to form and shape materials into artwork! It is important to remember that this can be nearly ANY type of material you can hold, and people make sculptures out of all sorts of things (paper, clay, stone, wood, ice, food, even garbage!) Our goal for this lesson is to experiment with forming and shaping the material (paper) and finding ways to create different shapes and effects that come off of the flat paper, and create our very own experimental 3D sculpture!

Materials:

Construction Paper (Colors Optional)

Scissors

Glue/ Glue Stick

Assignment:

The assignment this week is to experiment in creating your own pop up paper sculpture! To be successful with this lesson, all you need to do is try out different ways of forming and shaping the material (paper strips) to create different effects! You should be able to come up with at lead 5 different ideas (hint* there are a few in the demonstration if you get stuck) and add them into your sculpture. You can make this as crazy or as carefully as you'd like, just remember to experiment and have fun!
