SPECIAL EVENTS

MakeFest Connecticut

Calling all student inventors! Join the Connecticut Science Center to participate in its Maker Show-and-Tell at Community Day on September 19 from 11AM to 2PM. By illuminating makers' talents, they hope to expose local families to Connecticut innovation and craftsmanship and inspire them to create and build with their own hands. Makers can participate in either an in-person, socially distanced OR virtual live interview with a Connecticut Science Center team member. Pre-recorded videos are also welcome. Participants can show off their creations, describe the process of developing and building their products, and explain the inspiration behind their work. The event will stream live on social media page and throughout the galleries. Email the Science Center to register.

Global Innovation Field Trip

For 24-hours beginning on October 10 at Noon EST, become part of the Global Innovation Field Trip (GIFT), a live, on-line event where students in grades K to 12 can give 10 minute presentations about anything they have done involving innovation, invention and creativity. The first two GIFTs held in May and July included over 200 presenters from 16 different countries. Learn more and register to present here.

MATH

From youcubed: Dr Jo Boaler is The Nomellini-Olivier Professor of Mathematics Education at Stanford University, and the faculty director of youcubed.

In these times of uncertainty, youcubed is here to help students at home continue to explore and learn maths in rich and creative ways. We are collecting here modified versions of our tasks to be more home-friendly, as well as some new explorations designed for learners at home.

If you'd like to receive a weekly newsletter with curated suggestions for math at home, you can subscribe here.

Extend Your Learning

Remember, we can always find ways to extend our learning in math! If you finish the learning module work early, choose a problem from the day/week and do one of these activities.

Greg Tang is a leader in mathematics education. His site is free for all to use and he has committed to adding more free resources for students to use during school closures. Check his site often for new challenges and games!

Greg Tang Games are also available online and are free. You can even download many from the app store! Parents looking to make a purchase may be interested in browsing Greg Tang's store. Many of his games are used in our classrooms and make great additions to you home collection of board games and card games.

Make practice fun! Sample puzzle packs are available for each grade, free. Additional puzzle packs can be purchased, but this is not necessary.
