West Plaza Gated Alley Program Update
We received an updated status report from the City of Phoenix regarding the Gated Alley Program covering the West Plaza area, spanning 35th Avenue to 43rd Avenue and Glendale Avenue to Bethany Home Road.
The City shared a current map showing where each alley application stands in the process. Based on the City’s explanation:
• Blue segments represent alleys that are already gated or are currently in the construction phase.
• Green segments represent applications that have been approved and are waiting in the installation queue.
• Yellow segments represent applications that are pending final signatures and are not yet approved.
• Red segments represent locations that are not eligible at this time, most often due to gaps in required fencing between a residence and the alley.
City staff emphasized that the Gated Alley Program continues to see very high demand citywide, which contributes to longer wait times between approval and installation. While this can feel slow for residents who are waiting, the level of activity also reflects how widely used and valued the program has become.
The map provided by the City reflects the most up-to-date information available and helps show where progress is actively underway across the neighborhood
Today, our WPNA President Charle McGoldrick and Secritary Mary Jo Drakle were invited to attend the third annual Neighborhood Synergy Conference on Sept. 27, 2025 at the Marriott Phoenix Airport. The conference was designed for neighborhood leaders of neighborhood groups registered with NSD's database, called Neighborhood LINK. The conference will offer breakout sessions for attendees to learn the latest on city programs and to be informed about current city processes that could assist with neighborhood challenges. There are more pictures to come!
Here is an official link to the event details so you can read more about what the WPNA President and Secretary participated in.

Neighbors, volunteers, and city partners came together to clean up one of our neighborhood alleyways, and the results speak for themselves. Thanks to support from the City of Phoenix, who provided tools and equipment, this was a true team effort.
A big thank you to all our WPNA board and community members who showed up ready to work!
We’re especially grateful to Yolanda Osorio, our Neighborhood Specialist with the City of Phoenix, and to MaryJo Drakle, our dedicated WPNA Secretary. Their coordination and leadership made the day possible.
Events like these remind us of what’s achievable when residents and the city work side-by-side to care for our community.

On November 10, 2024, officers responded to an emergency radio traffic call of “shots fired” in the area of 8600 North 37th Avenue. As officers were responding to the scene they noticed a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle description. Officers attempted to stop this vehicle; however, it refused to stop and accelerated away from the patrol officers. Unbeknownst to the driver of the suspect vehicle, the police helicopter was overhead. As the vehicle continued to flee the area it lost control and became disabled in a dirt lot.
