Discovery Education Virtual Field Trip to Churchill, Manitoba, Canada to see the Polar Bears

We chose this as the first virtual field trip because one of our own Liberty teachers actually went on a trip to see the polar bears where this program is taking place in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. Since this is not a live broadcast the Q & A portion is not available. But because Mrs. Cardinali was there you can ask her questions at dcardinali@westorangeschools.org

These are actual pictures that Mrs. Cardinali took from her trip to see the polar bears.

What what is really like:

Mrs. Cardanali went to Churchill, Canada on Nov. 1, 2015 for a 5 day Polar Bear Discovery. These are her reflections.

There is only a period of about 5 weeks when the polar bears migrate to Churchill to the Hudson Bay. They are waiting for the Bay to freeze so they can begin to walk out on the ice and hunt for seals. These bears have been waiting for about 4-5 months to eat.

There are only 2 ways to get to Churchill - by train, or by plane.I had to fly from Winnipeg to Churchill on a charter plane which was only about a 45 minute flight. Churchill has a population of about 900 people. Fun fact, is that there are about the same amount of Polar Bears that reside in that area as well.

Her exploration was by a Tundra Buggy. She went out for two days 8-4 pm, and one evening ride 4-9pm. Went on the tundra and saw polar bears roaming - she saw mothers and cubs, individual bears (they prefer to be on their own), and males fighting. Large males seek out cubs to kill and eat - she saw a mother bear fighting a male to protect her babies. The male ended up backing away.

Representatives from WWE and Polar Bears International were present to give lectures on the dangers of Global Warming and its effect on the livelihood of the polar bears. Every year, polar bears lose 2-3 days of hunting due to the length of time it takes for the bay to freeze.

There is a Polar Bear jail - it is an old airplane hanger that they converted into a "jail" for polar bears that have roamed into town and have posed a threat to humans. The polar bears are "quarantined" for 21 days and are relocated to the ice via helicopter (taken in a net). When Mrs. Cardinali first arrived, she was able to see a mother bear and her baby being taken out of the "jail" on a flat bed vehicle (they were sedated) and hoisted onto a net. The baby was actually put inside the helicopter. They were safely relocated away from civilians.
