The Air Force Junior ROTC mission is to develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community. Students who participate in the program do not incur any obligation to the Air Force. Students will however, be instructed using the US Air Force training model. This will include physical training exercises, marching, use of military customs and courtesies and wear of the uniform once per week.
One of the keys to the success of the AFJROTC program lies in its academic foundations. The curriculum is divided into three components:
Aerospace Science
Leadership Education
Health and Wellness
Each AFJROTC unit balances all three areas to meet the particular needs and abilities of their cadets.
Cadets who complete three years of the AFJROTC academic program may earn a certificate of training and be eligible to enter the military at a higher pay grade compared to most other enlistees. AFJROTC cadets are better prepared to enter and work in a highly technical world in the civilian industry, or military service.
Although recruitment into military service is not a goal of the program, numerous WOHS Squadron Alumni have won ROTC college scholarships and appointments at military academies including the US Naval Academy; USAF Academy, and West Point. Scholarships and appointments have totaled in excess of $3 million.
The WOHS AFJROTC program has been named a Distinguished Unit 5 years in a row. This is the highest award a JROTC unit can be given by the Department of Defense.
