Math “Homework” in First Grade
We believe home math practice in first grade is best done through real life application and through games and play.
Building and creating with various materials develops spatial skills. Identifying and counting the coins in spare change develops fluency with addition and money. Watching the clock for a favorite activity or show develops the ability to tell time and number sense (analog as well as digital). We encourage parents to "think aloud" when doing any numerical thinking to allow children to see math in action. When appropriate, including them to reach solutions can be a powerful learning opportunity.
In addition to the everyday use of numbers, your child’s teacher will send home the “Game of the Month.” You are encouraged to play this game with your child as it will strengthen important first grade skills. While we carefully choose the time the games are introduced, continued play throughout the year is encouraged. All games will need simple material most families have at home such as dice or a deck of cards. When other materials are needed, they will be sent home with the child. Aim to play the game as often as enjoyable, hopefully at least once a week. Be sure to have fun! Enjoying the math is as important as learning the math for first grader.
As always, if you have any questions about your child’s math experience in first grade, don’t hesitate to contact his or her teacher.
