Encouraging young children to see and experience the correlation between oral language and written expression helps children to understand WHY we write. All children have stories to share, so ALL children are writers. Children touch each page of a book, orally telling their story, page by page. Next, children add a quick sketch of who was there and what happened. Lastly, students "write" their story. What children "write" on the pages of their book will depend on where they are in their writing development. See section on Stages of Writing Development for more information. Regardless of where children are in their writing development, we praise them for being a writer and support their ongoing growth and development.
See Links and Resources for ways you can support your young child's writing growth at home.
