Archie Nickel, here. Intrepid Middle School Sports Reporter updating you on the 2023 Weston Middle School Football Team. The Wildcats played notably this year, going 4-1 with only one game being canceled - an 80% win percentage. Player Woods Wilder said of the just-finished season “It was extremely fun, and I am looking forward to next year!”
One of the challenges Coaches Dunbar & Fazio had was keeping kids focused. This is important because if kids goof off they can get badly injured and not be able to play the rest of the season. Something to note, assuming you, dear reader, are still reading this article. Quarterback Chase Flint said “I like Coach Dunbar, he gives me free will of choosing the plays, and he knows how to keep the team in line when we were getting out of hand.”
One of the highlights of the season is that everybody got better as the season went on, Dubar said “everybody on the team got better from a football perspective.” If players were getting worse, that would be a sign of bad coaching, and “they would have to turn this team around 360,” according to Jason Kidd.
When looking to future football seasons, Coach Dunbar said that for upcoming seasons they could add more offensive formations to “make the defense think more on what play they’re running.” There were 14 8th graders on this year’s Wildcat team. Which is bittersweet for Coach Dunbar & Coach Fazio and the players, as this was a shorter season than last year. However, Dunbar wants to continue to utilize the Middle School team as a feeder system for the High School Wildcats Football program. Look to see many familiar faces on the high school team next year.
And that’s my five cents.
