Do you wonder what the candy drive is? I’m sure you have been hearing lots about it from the daily announcements, but what is it really? Well, this article can tell you all about it!
The candy drive is a project that collects all the candy that was donated to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Jamaica Plain, and distributes it to veterans.
“The reason that I donated to that hospital is because when my daughter did her nursing rotation there she told me to come and I really got to know and love all of the people there.“ Said Ms. McGrath.
Donating your candy can bring some joy to the veterans who are and were serving the country.
“They put a big box on each floor, and so we try to get as much candy as possible so they have more to distribute. “ Ms. McGrath explained. "You could make their day just by donating some of you leftover candy from Halloween. They appreciate it very much." In addition, the homeroom that donates the most candy gets a cookie party!
If you were wondering who is organizing this amazing drive, the student council, community service, and Ms. McGrath does this every year.
Starting after Halloween, please consider bringing in any of your leftover candy from Halloween to donate to the veterans. Just bring the sweets into room 229 and place it in one of the boxes in the room. It’s as easy as that! You have all the way till the 15th of November to donate, so get started now.
“I’ve had as many as ten big boxes of candy!” Ms. McGrath said in an interview. “During covid we got six boxes of candy, hopefully this year we get eight.” Also, this drive is not just for students. Many staff members and teachers donate candy as well.
This all started when a teacher at the high school started to collect candy. Ever since Ms. McGrath started the new drive, many people each year would bring in huge amounts of candy!
Two years ago seventh grade donated the most candy out of all the other grades, and last year the seventh did it again! Another big donator is Mr. Welby, according to Ms. McGrath. What grade will donate the most this year? What homeroom will win the cookie party? Will YOU win? Donate your candy and make a veteran smile!
