Homework Routines and Expectations

Frequency and Time

Students should expect math homework every night, including weekends. Students should spend 30 - 40 minutes on homework assignments. If students are not finished after 30-40 minutes, they can stop working and have a parent or guardian sign the assignment to indicate the student spent the expected amount of time.

All homework assignments should be completed neatly on a piece of paper in the HW spiral notebook. In order to receive full credit on their homework, students must have the correct headings, bring the assignment to class on the due-date, and have worked hard for 30 - 40 minutes. If students finish the assignment in significantly less than 30 - 40 minutes, they are expected to work on stretch content, individual explorations or challenging problem-solving practice.

Video Assignments

Some homework assignments will involve students watching a video, taking notes and answering questions presented in the video. The paper in the spiral for these assignments should be set up as shown below.

Worksheet Assignments

On worksheet assignments, students will view the assignment on their Chromebook (or other internet-connected device) and solve the questions on a piece of lined paper. The paper in the spiral for these assignments should be set up as shown below.

Alcumus Assignments

On the Alcumus assignments, students will view the assignment on their Chromebook (or other internet-connected device) and solve the questions on a piece of lined paper. The lined paper for these assignments should be set up as shown below. Students should keep the following in mind when working on Alcumus assignments:

  • For the purposes of 7th Grade Honors Math, reaching a score of 90 or higher on an Alcumus focus is considered achieving mastery of that focus.

  • The Alcumus software might automatically move a student onto the next focus when a score below 90 is reached. Students should re-set the focus to the one they were working on until a score of 90 or higher is reached (keeping the 30-40 minute time expectation in mind).

  • Reaching a score of 100 is challenging and often frustrating as the software will repeat many, many questions at this stage. Additionally, multiple questions must be answered for each point increase when the score is in the high 90s. Accordingly, students can stop when they reach a score of 90.

  • Students should NOT use a calculator on these assignments.
