Theme: Expression of Freedom

To me, freedom is the ability to express one's identity fully. I consider myself an Asian-American, and it has always been a large part of me. Although I live in America, my parents never let me forget my heritage and my beautiful culture. Something that is symbolic in Asian culture is the koi fish. They're especially popular in Japan, but can be seen throughout east Asia as valued pets or in hotel ponds as metaphorical symbols. Koi fish represent good luck, abundance, courage, and perseverance, which are some values that are needed in order to achieve freedom. Perfect freedom may not be attainable, but something close to it is something everyone should desire and work towards.

After creating a digital design, I was presented with the opportunity to paint it under the bridge of the Weston Rail Trail, which is now a biking/walking space. Along with other passionate artists, This social justice mural is symbolic of the presence of Chinese Americans in the town. It allows passersby to reflect on the courage of freedom and how we should never stop fighting for it.
