WeMA's Early Childhood Music class is held on Saturdays at 9am at Reynolds Hall, and introduces young children to the joy of music through singing, movement, rhythm, creative play, and hands-on musical exploration. Parents are encouraged to join. Come and have fun!

"When young children have a musical foundation, we see improvements in memory, problem solving, attention, cooperation, empathy, as well as gains in auditory skills. Singing comes first.
We represent sound through movement and song, providing the basis for successful music literacy. Through studying songs, students become fluent in language, and pitch matching. We use canons, partner songs, ostinati, solfeggio, and sound to symbol activities, all established through play and joy. This is music theory in action.
It is not only attention span, but attention depth that music can enhance. We become part of something bigger than ourselves. Playing and singing with others helps lower anxiety. Music Classes:
Theory Practice
A practical music theory class that helps students build confidence in reading and understanding music. Depending on their age and level, students will practice note and rhythm reading and writing, learn about time and key signatures, identify intervals and chords, and develop the skills needed to better understand the music they play.
Ages: 6-16

Tuition: $20 x 7 weeks
Composition Class
Students will explore the creative process of writing their own music. Beginning with an idea or melody, students will develop an original composition by making choices about style, instrumentation, and musical form. Over the course of the class, they will learn how to build their melody into a complete piece by adding harmonies, accompanying parts, and other musical elements.
Students will have time to experiment, revise, and develop their ideas at their own pace, with guidance from the instructor throughout the process. Each student will work toward completing and naming their own original composition.
Ages: 8-16

Musicianship & Ear Training Class
Add this 30min fun and engaging class for thoery and ear training boost!
A supportive class designed to strengthen instrumental study through singing, movement, rhythm, ear training, music reading, and theory. Students develop a deeper understanding of music while building the skills and confidence to become stronger, more independent musicians. The class can also be taken on its own by children who simply love music and singing and want to explore and grow their musical skills.
Ages: 6-16

Introduction to Instrumental Music

Fall/Winter Session: October 15–December 11
Ages: 4– 6 & 7–9
Schedule: Friday 4:00–4:30 PM (4-6 y/o), 4:30–5:00 PM (7–9 y/o)
Tuition: $25 per class
Introduction to Instrumental Music is an engaging, hands-on course designed for students who are curious about music and excited to explore the world of instruments. Throughout the class, students will experience a wide variety of instruments from different instrument families, while developing the foundational skills needed to become confident musicians. Students will learn to sing, read and understand music notation, keep a steady beat, listen and respond to music, and perform on a variety of instruments, such as piano, recorder, drums, ukulele, and xylophone. No prior musical experience is required.
Optional Add-on Private Lesson:
Ages 4–6: Ukulele or Piano: 10min/$20, 20min/$35
Ages 7–9: Ukulele, Violin, Recorder, Clarinet or Piano: 15min/$25, 30min/$50
Optional. If you’d like to learn an instrument, please register for the add-on lesson, and list your availability. We will do our best to accommodate your preferences, but scheduling is subject to teacher availability.
Introduction to Piano (Ages 4-6)
Fall Session II: October 17 – December 5 (7-week session)
Saturday 10:00–10:30 AM
Tuition: $30 per class
A playful introduction to the piano for young children. Through singing, movement, rhythm activities, games, and creative music-making, students explore the keyboard and begin to recognize the black and white keys. They also begin developing finger coordination and learning to use different fingers to play different notes. The class helps children develop an early understanding of musical concepts while becoming comfortable and curious at the piano.

Piano Foundations Group(Ages 6-8)

A beginning group class for students who are ready for a little more structured piano learning. Students explore the keyboard and develop beginning piano skills through simple exercises, music-reading activities, rhythm practice, and age-appropriate worksheets. Singing, games, and creative activities are also incorporated to keep learning fun and engaging.

Individualized Instruction:
Students may add a short Private Lesson for focused instruction tailored to their individual needs, musical interests, and learning style. Combining group learning with individualized instruction is recommended for students who are looking to spend more time at the piano, work more closely on pieces, and make steady progress from week to week. Private lessons can be scheduled right before or after class, or on a different day.
Classes emphasize healthy technique, good hand position, note & rhythm reading, artistic expression, and collaborative music-making.
Class Size: 3–4 students, depending on age and level

Rooted in the Suzuki method, this class will teach young violin students technical and ensemble skills in a fun, supportive environment. Students will practice and refine skills learned in their individualized lessons, including posture, rhythm, bow hold, and tone production. Combining group learning with individualized instruction is recommended for students who are looking to spend more time with their instrument, receive focused guidance, and make steady progress from week to week. Parents/caregivers are encouraged to attend class with students to learn how to support practice at home.

This class is designed for beginning and intermediate violin students and provides a supportive and engaging environment for developing technical, musical, and ensemble skills. Students will build a strong foundation in posture, rhythm, bow technique, and tone production while also exploring musical expression, artistry, and the joy of making music together.

Schedule: Saturdays 12:00 PM–12:50 PM
Tuition: $50 per class

This class is designed for intermediate to advanced violin students ages 13–18 who are ready to deepen their technique, musicianship, and performance skills. Students will explore advanced repertoire while developing musical expression, ensemble skills, and confidence through collaborative music-making and performance opportunities.

Scheduling Note: Private lessons are generally scheduled weekly throughout the session, though scheduling may vary based on teacher availability. Cello lessons may follow a different schedule, with lesson dates varying from week to week and not necessarily occurring on consecutive weeks. Missed lessons due to illness may be credited toward the following session.

Recommended for intermediate and advanced students with approximately two or more years of study on their instrument. Placement is based on experience and instrumentation.
Chamber music lies at the heart of WeMA's educational philosophy and is an essential part of the WeMA experience. Students grow as musicians through close collaboration with their peers, developing the skills of listening, communication, leadership, and teamwork. Just as importantly, chamber music provides a joyful and social musical experience where students build friendships, encourage one another, and discover the unique rewards of making music together.
Ensembles are thoughtfully formed each session according to instrumentation, age, and musical experience, and receive regular faculty coachings on Fridays or Saturdays. Students also have opportunities to perform together on campus.
For eligible students enrolled in the Comprehensive Music Program or Advanced Performance Program, chamber music is included as part of their tuition.

For students who want to take their music further, WeMA offers a comprehensive path that brings together three complementary areas of study: Instrumental Lessons, Classes, and Chamber Music. The program emphasizes artistic development, collaborative musicianship, performance, and preparation for advanced musical study. Students also have opportunities to work with a collaborative pianist to develop and polish their solo repertoire and performance skills.
Performance Workshop & Chamber Music: Performance Workshop and Chamber Music scheduling will be determined based on student enrollment and availability. We will collect your availability during registration and contact you with the schedule once groups and workshop times are established.

Musicians may choose private lessons, chamber music, or a combination of both. Instruction is tailored to each individual's goals and experience, whether refining technique, exploring new repertoire, or making music for personal enrichment.
Adult lessons may begin at any time of the year and are arranged directly with the instructor. Purchase a four-lesson series in advance, then schedule your lessons at a pace that best fits your lifestyle. Whether you meet weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or on another schedule, the series offers flexibility while accommodating teacher availability.

Schedule: Determined after registration based on the availability of ensemble members and faculty.
Tuition: $90 per musician, per month
Experience the joy of making music with others in a supportive and collaborative setting. Ensembles are thoughtfully formed based on instrumentation, musical experience, and scheduling availability, and pre-formed groups are also welcome.
Each ensemble receives two 75-minute faculty coachings per month. Following registration, coachings are scheduled based on the availability of the ensemble and faculty coach. Members may choose to rehearse independently between coachings at times and locations that work best for the ensemble. Rehearsal space at Westmont College may be reserved, subject to availability.
The program culminates in informal performance opportunities for those who wish to participate.
Additional faculty coachings: Two faculty coachings are included each month. Additional coachings may be scheduled for $120 per coaching, per ensemble.
