I can't believe this is our last newsletter of the school year! This week we continued to tell time to the hour and half hour. We reviewed adjectives and celebrated Pop Day. We continued learning about figurative language, focusing on alliteration this week.

Summer Reading: Keep your child's reading progress going by reading regularly this summer. The public library is a great resource to keep reading exciting this summer. If your child is still working toward their sight word goal, continue to practice identifying the first-grade words this summer, too.

Math

Classroom Content

It was wonderful to have so many families visit for Open House. Your students and I were so excited to have you visit! Thank you for visiting our room! This week we reviewed many Trimester 3 skills and completed assessments for our report cards. We began learning about 3-dimensional shapes in math and began our last phonics unit of the year. 

Engineering Unit:

We will soon begin our last science unit of the year, Engineering. The first-grade team is collecting blue painter's tape, empty toilet paper/paper towel rolls, empty yogurt containers, and items made of chipboard (ie: cereal boxes, tissue boxes, cracker boxes, etc.). We will be collecting these on an ongoing basis until the last week of school.

We began learning about 2-dimensional shapes this week. We continued learning about contractions (ie: can not = can't, I have = I've) in grammar and drew conclusions about books read in reading comprehension. We learned more about map skills this week.

Only students who have prepaid AND filled out the form will be sent to the photographer to have their picture taken. Classroom Content

This week we began Chapter 7 in math. This chapter focuses on graphing. We used the verbs have and had in sentences, identified the author's purpose for writing the texts we read, and continued to learn about plant adaptations.

Nightly Reading: Be sure to have your child to read for at least 15-20 minutes nightly. Your child can read independently, to someone, or someone can read to your child. RAZKids and the local library are great resources for your child to utilize. The more we practice our reading, the more proficient readers we become!

Math

We have been focusing on reviewing the math concepts taught in Chapter 6- Two-Digit Addition and Subtraction. Use this link to log in to Freckle to help your mathematician practice at home. Writing

This trimester we are focusing on Expository Writing. Expository writing includes a Topic Sentence, First, Next, Last, and a Closing Sentence. Expository writing explains, describes, gives information or informs the reader.  Please utilize this resource to help your writer at home. Phonics

This week in phonics we focused on adding suffixes to multisyllabic words (-ed, -s, -ing), Word of the Day (includes) and sentence dictation. Please practice tapping out each sound in a word, saying and spelling trick words (work, word, write), writing sentences and scooping them (You can write on the napkins., Stop disrupting our class!, I insulted my friend by mistake., Ben dislikes my cat.), and dictating words (bedbugs, exhales, flagpoles, publishing, indented, unzips, athletes). Comprehension

We have been focusing on  Author’s Reasoning to help us understand what we read and what is read to us. Use this video to help your reader at home. 

Grammar

May is Bike Month: Students celebrate “Bike, Scoot, and Roll Month” with Jibe’s latest challenge. From 5/1-5/14 students will be tracking their daily riding (bike, scooter, skateboard, or skates) in class each day. All riders receive a custom key chain and the highest participating grade wins a Kona Ice party!
