How do foundational texts shape our understanding of a perfect society and who is excluded from the American ideal of a “perfect society”?
How do perceptions of “the other” influence utopian ideals? Who belongs in utopia? How do race, power, and colonization shape the boundaries of belonging in imagined societies?
When do ideals become dangerous? How do societies use fear and ideology to protect their vision of perfection–and at what cost to dissenters and the marginalized?
What warnings do dystopias offer society’s pursuit of utopia?
How are the warnings of dystopian fiction reflective of our society?
