We’re going to explore new cultures and destinations. We will study topics such as physical and human geography, economics, government, cultural traits, and current events. We will explore how these impact the world we live in and interact with every day. This is not your typical history class.

Ethnic Studies:
This course is a comprehensive survey of the major political, economic, geographic, social, and cultural trends and events of the United States from the 18th century to the present. Though this course will highlight the histories and experiences of African Americans, Asian Americans, Latino Americans, and Indigenous Americas and how race, ethnicity, nationality, and culture have shaped and continue to shape our lived experience in the United States, it is a comprehensive and detailed examination of all of American history. Students will be exposed to the accomplishments, history, and culture of various ethnic groups within the American and global context with an emphasis on the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, but also including a detailed review of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as a foundation for understanding the evolving culture and policies of the United States. Students will consider the various aspects that make one’s identity and consider their own identity within the context of American society. This course will engage students in intellectually and emotionally rigorous reading and writing in order to critically think about the world around them. Specific engagement in the course will include readings, class discussion, research projects, film, and writing which will provide students with opportunities to develop an understanding of power, cultural diversity, and movements for social justice in the United States.
