Your Intellectual Autobiography

‘An important skill for the knower is the ability to reflect on their thinking processes. This skill is referred to as , or knowing about knowing. To practice this skill, consider the influences and events that have shaped you as a knower and thinker, and write a short intellectual autobiography. How did you become the thinker you are today?

In drafting your intellectual autobiography, consider how the following have influenced your thinking and the way you see the world today:

  • your upbringing and participation in different communities

  • your schooling

  • your experiences with specific places, people, events, or key ideas


Your should also reflect on the following questions:

  • How much of your intellectual development has been intentional?

  • In what ways do you want to develop as a thinker and a knower?

  • Did the way you see the world change at any time in your intellectual development? What does it mean to you to change not just you think, but you think?


You can do this as an essay, a mindmap, a poster, or any format that feels appropriate and authentic – be as creative as you like!
