Meet our Keynote Speaker- Volker Bach


Volker Bach aka Giano Balestriere studied History in Hamburg and Dublin. He has been active in the SCA for over twenty years and is especially fascinated by culinary history. Alongside his work as a language teacher and translator, he publishes on the history of German food and teaches historic cookery classes. His recipe translations and experiments can be found at www.culina-vetus.de.

Volker will be presenting on his Landsknecht Cookbook.

What did landsknecht soldiers eat? Forthcoming this year, the Landsknecht Cookbook tries to answer that question in over 50 recipes from original sources. Explore the cuisine of sixteenth-century Germany with me, learn about field kitchens, camp markets, and the perils of the Gartzeit.
