Come learn about the art of moneying. I will share with you how I make and maintain the various tools used in the creation of coin dies, basic coin layout, and the considerations of whether to use punches, gravers, or both in bringing the artwork of the coin to life. Many examples of coin dies and tools will be on display as well as a small selection of related texts on ancient coins and techniques. While I specialize in the striking of two-sided coins, I am also interested in learning about other techniques of creating coins as well as other forms of "currency." Please come by and have a chat, we may both learn something.
Baron Sean Tracy has been involved in many art forms, from calligraphy and illumination to armoring and cordial making. His current passion is in moneying, or the striking of coins, typically for the royalty to use as way to express gratitude for those around them wo do service, both large and small. Many of the coins I have struck over the years have been for royalty, but many have also been for others wishing to commemorate an important event: a peerage, a vigil, an anniversary, even a local branch or Barony wishing to have coins. We also enjoy using the coins as gaming tokens during our evening revels at events. I have been active in the West Kingdom Moneyer's Guild since 2017, and I am always happy to talk about my art with anyone who has an interest in ancient money.
I will be displaying a variety of prehistoric replicas that showcase a new or important technology that was developed in the early history of humans. This will include a variety of types of objects along with research papers available for a deeper look into any of interest.
Ælfmær is a researcher and experimental anthropologist currently working in the Eurasian Paleolithic to Chalcolithic time period. She likes to find when humans first did a thing and then explore why they would have done so or how they would have done so.
I developed a class on this subject to prepare folk for one of the Arts competitions at Spring Crown. There will be images on display and a handout. There will also be a few books folk can peruse and I am always open to questions.
Baroness Grania is an journeyman alchemist with the International Alchemists Guild. Her goal is to bring this untapped art to the fore in the West Kingdom and the Knowne World.
My display consists of my studies of period music as well as the process I utilize when composing my own pieces in which I partake in contrafactum, or the composition of pieces while borrowing from other's music. My studies primarily focus on music that was sung while going on Pilgrimage in addition to the songs of the Cantigas de Santa Maria. I will also be showcasing my scribal pieces that I have created for others.
Her name is super long so most people call her Viscountess Fatimah or Naquiba Fatimah for short. She resides in the Canton of Hawks Haven, Barony of Darkwood, in the Principality of the Mists, Kingdom of the West. She loves all things bardic! Performance art is her passion, and has been for many, many years. She also dabbles in scribal arts (she's a sinister scribe, watch out for the lefties!) as well as costuming, and is always eager to learn new things. She has taken up an apprentice belt to a wonderful laurel, Master Alessandro Cantori, who specializes in period music, and he has been guiding her on her path of the performing arts. She has begun to work on composing more of her own pieces as well as studying period pieces and soon will be teaching others about the things she has been studying.
Recreations of extant bridles and bridles found in iconography.
She is newer to the SCA but has always obsessed over the details of period historical costumes, leading me to this club of like minded individuals. She has some time working Renn Faires, and just loves making historical stuff. She is also a lifetime equestrian and has repaired tack for years, even making some alterations to make modern tack fit better. She has for a long time poured over extant bridle findings and recently took the plunge into recreating some of her favorites. Working with metal to make buckle plates and finding for bridles and belts has been incredibly satisfying. During her research she has discovered that a lot of the techniques and methods for creating bridles overlap with belts.
This is a hands on display on creating scrolls. I will have documentation showing what order a manuscript was made in as well as examples on how I create something like a scroll. There will be supplies provided for you to be able to tip your toes in the world of Illustration and Calligraphy. I can not wait to see you all there.
Hrefna likes to make scrolls among other things. She painted her first scroll on September 2, 2023 and it went out that very next day. She finished her next scroll on September 14th with it going out at the very next event when it was given to Christel Leake to write on. Since then she has finished lots of scrolls including a couple Pelicans and a Master of Defense scroll. She is still in love with painting snailbirds but enjoy pushing myself on Greek/Roman mosaic style scrolls.
Please come see my ceramics, incense, hair ointment, carved soap stone goddess, mythical armor, plague mask, comparing sirens, and Baba Yaga's home. I look forward to seeing you!
She is an herbalist and is interested in the many and various roles that plants played in people’s lives up through the 12th century from food as medicine to perfumery and poisons. She is most interested in the relationship people have had with plants to heal the aches and pains of daily life and how people have cultivated plants to enhance and improve their lives. Of particular interest is the intersection of spices and their uses medicinally. She looks forward to sharing my passion for the arts and sciences with others.
Owen’s work over the past year has been centered around learning about the world of Ancient Rome and its uses of fine art. This research led him to the discovery of the Fayum portraits of Roman Egypt, a paradigm shift to his understanding of Western Art history, which has become a particular focus of his study in the SCA. Owen will be displaying some of his Roman themed work from 2025.
Owen has been a proud member of the Kingdom of the West for 20 years now. In that time he has made friends and family, fought and painted and proudly served our Royals and our beautiful Dream. Owen is a member of the Order of Chivalry, and is and is joyfully pursuing The Arts under the guidance of Sir Helga Skjaldmaer, his Laurel.
This display is a progression of work to turn blank copper plate into the outer faces of a glass enameled reliquary casket in the style of those produced in Limoges France circa 1175-1200. Each part of the display will showcase a distinct stage of fabrication: Resist applied, Etched, Raw fired, Ground, Final firing, and Gold plating.
He is a Knight of the Realm and a maker of shiny and pretty things. Over the last 35 years, he's lived in every kingdom along the Mexican border and now proudly call the West his home. He has been a Herald, a landed Baron and a commander of warbands. And in that time he's become proficient in armouring, brewing, cordwaining, jewelry metalworking, etching, and recently, champleve enameling.
This display will show the territories of the Baltic Tribes between 12-14th century as well as a woven recreation of a Curonian grave find.
She has been in the SCA since 2018. She plays with string, makes chainmaile, does leather working and fights heavies.
I will be displaying the leather work i have created for my self and for others, and my art I put on it. It will include, scabbards, bags, and notebook covers, plus I will include pictures of other items I am unable to bring and pictures of some of the projects in progress. Although most of these items are not exactly period I try to make them inspired by history and the art.
Halfdan the Quiet has been playing regularly in the SCA since 2022. He's known about the SCA since 2001 but only went to one or two events, and was unable to fully dive in and enjoy as life got in the way. Fast forward to 2022 he and his lady, her Ladyship Hrefna I Stranda, decided to jump in. He started heavy fighting, and that got him In to leather work, and making his own armor, then was inspired to start making other things out of leather, sheaths, scabbards, and bags. He's always enjoyed art and has been very pleased that his drawing skills have transfered over into creating designs he's able to tool into leather. He still has a lot to learn in this craft and looks forward to making more historical accurate items, and learning the history of all things leather.
