The Palatine Barony of Allyshia is a local branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), a worldwide nonprofit organization dedicated to researching and recreating the arts, skills, culture, and combat of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Within the SCA, a barony is a large local group led by a Baron and Baroness who serve as ceremonial representatives of the Crown.
The Barony of Allyshia is located in the northern coastal region of the Kingdom of the West and primarily encompasses Humboldt County in modern Northern California, including communities such as Eureka, Arcata, and Fortuna. Allyshia hosts tournaments, feasts, classes, camping events, and demonstrations throughout the year, fostering community, hospitality, historical learning, and the shared celebration of medieval culture.
A small number of baronies in the SCA hold the special designation of “Palatine.” These include the Palatine Barony of the Western Seas in Hawaii, the Palatine Barony of the Far West across the Pacific Rim, and the Palatine Barony of Allyshia in Northern California. The title “Palatine” reflects the unique nature of these groups, which are geographically distant from the major population centers of their kingdoms. Because of this distance, Palatine Baronies traditionally have greater local involvement in selecting their leaders.
Unlike most SCA baronies, where the Baron and Baroness are chosen through recommendation and appointment, Palatine Baronies determine succession through tournaments and competitions. Traditionally in Allyshia these contests include armored combat, arts and sciences challenges. This system allows the local populace to directly compete for the honor of ruling their lands.
