Male troubadours and female trobairitz were composers and performers of Occitan (langue d'oc) lyric love poetry during the High Middle Ages (1100–1350 A.D.) in the region of Southern France (Provence). The trouvères of Northern France wrote and performed in the dialect of langue d'oïl and while they were roughly contemporaries of their southern counterparts, they were likewise influenced by them; however, there is no evidence of any actual female trouvères. Despite examples of trouvère "chansons de femmes" (songs with a women's perspective or voice), they were written by male "trouvères". We will examine the origin and history of this genre of lyric love poems and songs and then, we will review a sampling of extant lyric poems and music.
