To mitigate the effects of poverty on achievement, caused by lack of access to books at home, by helping students build engaging home libraries with books of their choice.
By the time students without book access at home reach 6th grade, they read at a level 1-2 years behind more affluent peers who have access to books at home year round. According to data from Unite for Literacy, only 20%-30% of homes in Iron River have more than a hundred books in the house.
We will create a monthly menu of books that students can choose a book from to build their home libraries and increase their love of reading. The menu will consist of a combination of books that are windows into other views of the world, mirrors where they can see their lives reflected, and sliding glass doors where they can step into worlds unknown.
