Terms to Know

Meta (Oculus) Quest 2: This is the headset model that we have. If you are doing research about apps or games make sure that they are for this model.

Guardian: The zone that is created when you put the headset on that you cannot move out of.

Roomscale: It is a type of Guardian that allows you to move around the space.

Stationary: It is a type of Guardian that you will use if you are sitting or standing in one place.

Passthrough: It allows you to see the world around you in black and white.

Mixed Reality: Some apps and games allow you to interact with objects in VR while you can also see the real world around you.

Hand tracking: Using your hands in place of controllers to control the headset.

Metaverse: a virtual-reality space in which users can interact with a computer-generated environment and other users

180° Video: This is a type of VR experience that is not interactive. You can only see what is in front of you and to the sides. Often you will find them on YouTube VR and some apps.

360° Video: This is a type of VR experience that is not interactive. You can look around in every direction. Often you will find them on YouTube VR and some apps.

Room Setup: This allows you to add objects from the real world to VR such as walls, doors, windows, and tables.

Turn headset on

  • It should turn on when you put the headset on.

  • If it doesn't you can press and hold the power button on the right side of the headset for a few seconds

  • If the controllers don't wake after you turn on the headset you can press any button to wake them.

Adjust the Guardian

  • When you put on the headset for the first time it will ask if you want to use a Stationary or Roomscale boundary.

  • Use Stationary if you are going to be sitting or standing in one place.

  • Use Roomscale if you are going to be moving around and safely have the space to do so.

  • If you want to change it later you can open the Settings app from the App Menu

  • Select Guardian

  • Select Adjust Guardian

  • Using the controller you can create a Roomscale Guardian and draw it on the floor or choose a Stationary boundary.

Change the volume

  • You can press the buttons on the bottom right side of the headset. If you are casting to another device you will need to adjust the volume on that device.

Downloading apps

  • Do not download any apps.

Casting, screenshots, or recording video

  • Select the Camera App from the bar at the bottom of the screen.

  • Casting, choose the device you want to cast to

    1. Meta Quest mobile app: This option is only available if you have a device signed into the same account on a phone.

    2. Computer: This option seems to be the most stable but you need to be signed into the same account as the headset. You can go to oculus.com/casting on a laptop or desktop computer. If you want it on the TV or projector you can then cast that tab.

    3. Casting to a Chromecast: Select the Chromecast you want to cast to. If the connection drops you will have to restart casting.

The Camera app is the icon that is red and has a camera icon near the middle.

Check the battery percentage

  • If the toolbar is not visible at the bottom of the screen you can press the Oculus button on the right controller.

  • Select the Quick Settings area of the left of the toolbar where the Time, Battery, and WiFi are displayed.

  • You can see the battery percentage of the headset and controllers at the top left of the Quick Settings.

The Quick Settings is the button with the time on the far left.

Open the Settings app

  • Select the App Menu from the bar at the bottom of the screen.


  • The list is in Alphabetical or Most Recently opened order.

The App Menu is the button on the far right.

Charging the headset

  • You can find the charging port on the left side of the headset.

  • You can use the same charger that your Chromebook uses.

  • The battery last 1-2 hours depending on what is being used.

  • As with any device that has a rechargeable battery, do not leave it plugged in after it reaches 100% charge as this can damage the battery over time.

  • If the batteries on the controllers are dead please return the headset and controllers to the library.

Clean the lens

  • Try your best not to touch the lens. With them being so close to your eyes anything, such as a scratch or fingerprint will cause a worse experience.

  • If you need to clean it use a microfiber cloth without any liquid on it.

Controller Buttons

Left Controller

Joystick - Can be used for moving around menus and interacting with objects in apps.

Menu Button - Press in certain apps to bring up the menu inside apps and experiences.

X - You can use the X button to select objects.

Y - You can use the Y button to return to the previous screen.

Right Controller

Joystick - Can be used for moving around menus and interacting with objects in apps.

Oculus Button - Press at any time to bring up the universal menu. You can press and hold this button to recenter your view.

A - You can use the A button to select objects.

B - You can use the B button to return to the previous screen.

Note: Some apps can change what most of the buttons do. Those apps often include tutorials to teach you what to do.

Each controller also has two triggers that allow you to interact and select objects. Depending on the app they can be used to grab objects or make a fist with your virtual hands.

Toggle Passthrough Mode

  • You can quickly double-tap the side of the headset to toggle between seeing the world around you in black and white and back into VR.

  • You can also toggle Passthrough in the Quick Settings menu.

  • Note: If you can’t turn Passthrough off make sure that you are inside the existing Guardian boundary.

Use your hands as controllers

  • Set down the controllers in a safe place.

  • You should now see your hands in front of you.

  • You can select object by pinching your thumb and index finger.

  • You can bring up a menu to select the Oculus button or other actions by having turning the palm of your hand to face you and pinching your thumb and index finger.

  • To go back to the controllers just pick them back up. It is helpful to find them either by turning on Passthrough mode or have someone hand them to you.


Turn off the headset

  • The headset will go to sleep about 15 seconds after you take off the headset. The battery will still drain slowly while sleeping.

  • If you want to turn off or restart the headset you can press and hold the power button for a few seconds. Once the menu comes up you can use the controller to select the option you want.
