Fun ways to practice math
Count
Find things to count and practice counting
Skip, Jump and Count
Say a number and show it by using your fingers or a flash card. Then say, "Give me 4 jumps." (or hops, spins, etc.) Continue using different numbers and movements. Remember, one movement for each number.
Number Search
Look for numbers wherever you go (shopping, in the car, at a restaurant, walking in the neighborhood).
Number Sense
Match numbers with sets of objects to help your child develop the meaning of "sense" of a number. This helps your child know that the word "three" (or the numeral 3) means a collection of three objects.
Number Card Activities
Put number cards in order
Lay out the number cards and find "counters" to put on the card (buttons, coins, candies)
Math Language
Find ways to make math vocabulary part of everyday conversations. Use words such as more/less, heavy/light, small/large, above/below, wide/narrow, inside/outside, and thick/thin as you describe and locate objects.
Play games
Board games with dice and counting are a fun way to practice math concepts.
Card games like War or variations of War - For example, draw two cards and add them together, the one with the greater sum gets all the cards OR change to the one with the lesser sum gets the cards for a different version. Be creative.
