A NOTE FROM WORLD LANGUAGES SUPERVISOR ENRIQUE PINCAY:
Bonjour! - Ciao! - Salve! - 您好 (níhăo) - Hola!
At Westfield High School, the World Languages Department offers beginner, intermediate and advanced courses in five languages: French, Italian, Latin, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. Incoming 9th grade students have the following choices.
Continue the study of the language they explored in their intermediate school, French or Spanish
Continue the study of their current language and add a second language to study simultaneously
Start fresh with any of the other languages offered at Westfield High School.
Selecting a language of study is not always an easy decision to make. We encourage parents and students to engage in conversation regarding level of interest, opportunities to use the target language/s beyond the classroom, career interests, travel opportunities, and the level of curiosity in the cultures represented by the target language/s.
The WHS Italian, Latin, and Mandarin teachers have created video recordings to introduce themselves and share the importance of learning the language they teach. All 8th grade students will watch these videos in their respective world language classes. In addition to these videos, we invite you to watch our student videos which capture their perspective as World Language students as they share their own experiences and the reasons why they chose their language. We hope you find them helpful and wish our students success in their high school career.
