We had a great week! Here are some things we worked on in class:
Writing - In writing, we wrapped up our poetry unit this week! Our final poems included a free verse poem created for our Flag Day celebration and an "I Am" poem, which encouraged students to reflect on their thoughts, feelings, interests, and unique qualities. It was wonderful to see their creativity shine as they shared these personal and thoughtful pieces.
Reading - In reading, we are continuing our novel study of Campfire in California. In this exciting adventure, Jack and Annie travel to Yosemite National Park, where they meet a mysterious companion named Teddy. We recently discovered that Teddy is actually President Theodore Roosevelt! As we continue reading, we will explore how Roosevelt’s experiences and adventures in Yosemite inspired him to protect its natural beauty and helped lead to Yosemite becoming a national park. Students are enjoying learning about both the story and the important history behind this remarkable American landmark.
Math - In math this week, we have been exploring fractions! Students have been practicing dividing shapes into equal halves, thirds, and fourths while learning that all parts of a fraction must be equal in size. We have also been identifying and naming fractions, as well as comparing different ways shapes can be partitioned into equal parts. Through hands-on activities and visual models, students are developing a strong foundation for understanding fractions and how they represent parts of a whole.
Social Studies - We Our Flag Day celebration was a huge success! It was wonderful to see everyone dressed in their red, white, and blue as we came together to honor our nation's flag. During the celebration, students learned about the history and significance of Flag Day, and several of our talented poets had the opportunity to share their Flag Day poems with the first and second grade classes. The event concluded with a spirited sing-along of patriotic songs, making it a memorable and meaningful celebration for all!
Science - We had some very special visitors in our classroom this week—Penelope’s chicks! Students were thrilled to observe these precious chicks up close and even had the opportunity to hold them. There was so much excitement as we learned about the chicks and watched their adorable behaviors. A big thank you to Penelope and her family for sharing this wonderful experience with our class!
Reminders for Next Week
Many of our friends are without pencils and markers. We will be making a good amount of projects before the end of the year. Please ask your student if they are in need of pencils.
