Welcome to the 2025-2026 school year! Your students have done a great job so far this past week in science class. I am excited to go on this journey with your child as they cross into middle school. We have many wonderful experiences planned for the classroom and I look forward to getting to know your child and meeting you all next Thursday (9/18) at Back to School Night. Please use this newsletter as a way to become familiar with what to expect during your child's first month in 6th-grade science. As always, email me with any questions or concerns you may have as we navigate this transition together.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Thayer
Please refer to my website for information about the course, my extra help schedule, the class calendar, and resources for caregivers.
The class calendar will be updated weekly with information about what we will be doing in class that week. Please click on the "event" for that day to view any homework that has been assigned. This is a great way for you to see what is coming up for the week and for your child to see what they missed if they are absent! For some assignments students have multiple days to complete so you will see it repeated over multiple days. We will be having our first assessment next Friday 9/19 - students will receive a study guide this Friday.
Your child will receive two important documents during the first weeks of school. The first will be a class expectations document and the second will be a lab safety document (both are linked below for your reference). After reviewing these documents in class, your child will be assigned a Google Form that they will complete with you at home to acknowledge that your household has reviewed and understands these guidelines. This Google Form will be assigned through Classroom on Thursday 9/11 and will need to be completed by Tuesday 9/16.
Google Classroom is designed to be a student-facing resource where students can find digital copies of handouts, presentations, class notes, and assignments that have been designed for the computer. Students are encouraged to use the classwork tab and the to-do list in Google Classroom to stay on top of their assignments. We will go over all of this in class this week!
Please click on the image below to open a Google Slides presentation that overviews our curriculum and how to best support your child as we embark on this journey together! More information will be provided at Back to School Night.
The purpose of this newsletter is to help you stay connected with what we are doing in class so you can best support your child at home. In these newsletters, I will review what we have been working on over the past month and what the next few weeks in the classroom will look like. This newsletter is meant for parents and guardians only since it will cover topics that have not been introduced in class yet.
Our phenomena-based units help to:
Create a shared problem-solving experience for your student
Promote joy and accomplishment through discovery.
Important thing to remember:
This process can be messy and challenging, so newsletters will be sent monthly to allow you to experience the phenomena we are investigating in class along with your child.
Students will review 6th-grade science policies, then learn daily Science and Engineering Practices and overarching unit themes. Here are examples of class activities to get acclimated.
Designing an investigation to see whether or not two items of the same mass will fall at the same rate.
Investigation cause and effect relationships and drawing models to show our thinking!
