Dear Families:
The COVID–19 pandemic is inevitably affecting our children in non-academic ways. Please take a moment to read the information below.
The following is a link to an excellent article for parents with guidelines for talking to children of all ages about COVID–19. Please take the time to read it.
Talking to Children about COVID-19 (Coronavirus)
Generally speaking, keep the following in mind for children and teens:
Remember that our children take their cues from adults. Although we are all worried, modeling a calm response will help them cope with their anxiety.
Validating fears and concerns is important. Letting them know that experiencing a wide range of feelings is usual in uncertain situations.
Remind them COVID -19 can affect people of all races, ethnicities, nationality or age and that comments, assumptions and jokes can be hurtful.
Lastly, remember to take care of yourself emotionally as well as physically. A quick google search will provide a wealth of resources, apps and links with ideas for managing stress and anxiety. Many can be done as a family. Green Child Magazine has an inventory of quick links for free Guided Relaxation Scripts for kids, and Mindfulness for Teens is a good starting point for older children.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.
Best,
Frank
