McKinley Kid TV has been a tradition at McKinley School since 1999! It all started with a few teachers, one heavy, clunky video camcorder, a VCR, and come creative kids. McKinley Kid TV asked, "What if we could produce a morning announcement show for McKinley kids starring the kids themselves?" So, McKinley School was born when the school was fitted with a closed caption cable signal to every TV set mounted in all the classrooms. We quickly realized we had something truly unique that no other school in town could replicate.
The pioneers of McKinley Kid TV are Mr. Paradise and Mrs. McGarry, both McKinley School teachers. Over the years, many teachers have pitched in. Throughout the last 2 years, McKinley Kid TV celebrated McKinley student birthdays, retirements, holidays, and showcased student talents with a special brand of info-tainment with a kid-centric view. The show officially changed its name to "McKinley Kid TV" in 2002. We were so happy to share these memories with our McKinley community.
In the early days, the show didn't have a lot of sophistication, as editing software wasn't available. Our "TV studio" was located in a tiny corner of the library. But, as technology advanced, so did our show. Soon, we bought a second camera, then, our new software called "iMovie", which allowed us to use special effects. After that came microphones, lights, then laptops, and eventually iPads.
In 2016, Kid TV evolved further when we installed editing software on our iPad cart so student film crews could work independently as director and producers. Mr. Paradise and Mrs. McGarry assumed the role of "mentor" letting students have all creative control of their show segments. Then, in 2017, we took another step forward when we reached out to the McKinley community and hired mentors, including teachers, parents, and the talented, David Scherzer, who took on the role as Head Video Editor. Mentors met with student groups each Monday and guided them with career skills like storyboarding, researching / writing voiceover copy, film techniques, editing, audio effects, and interviewing. Every costume, prop, or set backdrop was either created, borrowed, or found by the cast. McKinley Kid TV was even featured on the public cable TV program, Classroom Closeup New Jersey, where an actual film crew came to cover our show for a segment on the NJ-12 school news program.
McKinley Kid TV has become a beloved tradition for all students and staff during the annual June Kid TV assembly and a rite of passage for the fifth graders moving on to middle school. We hope you enjoy looking back at the show and seeing the famous stars of McKinley School throughout the years. Every show is a time capsule of memories and a labor of love. We know they will be cherished by kids young and old. So, as we say here at McKinley Kid TV, "Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!"
