Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to a new year of learning at Edison Intermediate School!  I am excited to introduce myself as your child’s mathematics teacher.  My name is Mrs. Mantie and I am delighted to be teaching your child this year. During my time at EIS, I have had the pleasure of teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th grade mathematics. Over the years, I have developed a thorough understanding of the middle school mathematics scope and sequence. This perspective allows for an instructional approach that builds on prior knowledge and scaffolds new learning. Together, we will leverage your child’s unique strengths and deepen their understanding of mathematics. We will work to cultivate a growth mindset that fosters resiliency and confidence. Most importantly, we will support one another through the learning process, ensuring that each and every student finds success.

My philosophy is that there are many ways to develop excellent math habits.  Students often perceive their success in mathematics as getting correct answers and straight A’s.  While these achievements are important, students can sometimes prioritize their significance over other important qualities exhibited by mathematicians. These include working collaboratively, explaining your thinking, communicating ideas clearly, critiquing the reasoning of others, constructing logical arguments, conceptualizing problems in different ways, recognizing mistakes, asking for help, persevering in problem-solving, using prior knowledge, and making real-world connections. Most importantly, excellent math students believe in themselves. They possess a growth mindset and understand that intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work.

I am confident in the potential that your child has to excel in mathematics this year.  It is my goal to help your child foster self-awareness and the courage to embrace challenge as a learning opportunity. I believe that the combination of meaningful instruction, academic rigor, and social and emotional skill development provide the optimal learning environment for middle school mathematics. I am excited for the many ways in which your child will grow as a mathematics student this year! I am committed to helping your child achieve their best and seek to maintain open communication and goal setting with you. Please contact me at jmantie@westfieldnjk12.org with any questions or concerns that you may have. I thank you in advance for your continued support and cooperation. It is going to be a great year!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Julia Mantie
