Westerly Vision of Literacy Instruction
Westerly students will grow as critical readers, writers, speakers, listeners, and thinkers. Students will intentionally interact with diverse and high-quality complex texts, participate in thought-provoking discussions, and communicate through multiple modalities. Students will graduate as agents of their own learning and become objective, constructive citizens who consciously contribute to the ever-changing world.
Students will independently apply their learning:
to build fluency and confidence when reading and communicating in any context
to expand their vocabulary to enhance their understanding and communication skills
to persist when tasks are rigorous
to develop their character to demonstrate empathy and an open mindset to various perspectives
to see themselves as readers and writers
to find joy in reading, writing, and discourse with others
