An informational text (also called “expository” and “informative”) is a piece of nonfiction writing that is intended to inform the reader with factual information about a specific topic. This form of writing can be used to:
Explain how to do something (sequence of steps in a process)
Give information about a topic
Describe something (problem/solution, cause/effect, compare/contrast)
Q: Will I have to write informational texts in college?
A: Yes! Many midterms and final exams require students to organize and analyze course information and communicate complex ideas.
Q: Will I have to do this in my career?
Yes! Depending on your career, you might write medical reports, legal briefings, book reviews, company annual reports, or other work reports, summaries, and more!
