MILESTONE 1, STEPPING STONE 1
MILESTONE 1, STEPPING STONE 1
In this Stepping Stone, we will look at a real world example of quadratics and their solutions.
Remember the Angry Birds game that everyone was obsessed with playing? It's an example of quadratics! The paths that the birds follow as you slingshot them are parabolas. This means that the paths can be modeled by quadratic equations. The birds are launched as projectiles to try to get them to land at a certain spot. The spot where the birds are launched and the spot where they land are the x-intercepts/zeros/roots of the quadratic. These are the solutions to the quadratic equation when solved algebraically. We will be solving for these solutions in this studio.
1. Look at the photo and watch the video below.
2. Using the Student Tools below, go to the GeoGebra applet linked below and play around with changing the path of the angry bird and launching the angry bird to land on the pig.
3. Pay attention to the launch points and landing points of the bird and also what the equation looks like as you change the variables with the sliding scales.

As you can see when you play around in the Geogebra applet above, looking at quadratic graphs is a quick way to tell what the solutions to the quadratic are. It's where the parabola crosses the x-axis!
