From day one, America has been getting bigger. From the American Revolution to Westward Expansion to the age of Imperialism, the United States has acquired territory from other nations through purchases, treaties, and sometimes conquest. The largest period of territorial expansion was during the Westward Expansion phase, and it was justified by the term Manifest Destiny. Oftentimes, this expansion occurred at the expense of others, however, it is arguable that our nation is still expanding in different ways. And even today, it can occur at the expense of others.
