Responding using understandings and information is more than just answering a question using information directly from the text. You also need to put this information into your own words, and add your own ideas to your answer. These ideas come from your prior knowledge about the subject or from other sources of information you have read or seen. Interpreting and synthesising information is an important area to work on in order to achieve this strategy.
When students have to respond to a question using information and their own understandings they are using higher order thinking skills in order to decode, evaluate and critically analyse information in relation to a question. Students are able to draw form multiple sources including their prior knowledge and articulate this information. The important thing to note for this strategy is that students should be going deeper into their answers providing clear information related to the question along with their own personal understanding.
