Paradox

In Colorado's Paradox Valley there lies a quiet, almost secret, little town. The community of Paradox is much like a living time capsule that has preserved elements of of a time that seems to have survived in few other places. Paradox combines the endearing charm of a 1940's community with an expansive power that could only be created by our spectacular scenery. It is a wild west town that is both pure and unpretentious. Striking red mesas form two majestic walls that run the length of the valley. Public lands and open range make up the valley floor. While to the east and the west the San Juan and La Sal mountain ranges sit serenely in the distance as if quietly guarding the peace of this desert town.

The small town of Paradox is home to about 250 people. Among this surprisingly diverse group of individuals you will find ranchers, small business owners, artists, farmers, skilled crafters, school teachers, musicians and at least one industrial software designer. If this list went on it would help to illustrate how our community is both alternative and conventional, conservative yet liberal, intimate yet connected to a modern global society - perhaps even dreamy, but down to earth and simple in a way that is quite humble and very real.

The old red church in Paradox today serves as a community center for functions throughout the year.

Paradox Cemetery, while still serving as a place of rest for deceased loved ones in our community, is a piece of old west history with graves dating back to 1901, and undated graves that are older.

The building that once housed the Paradox Mercantile, now stands as a nostalgic token of western charm in downtown Paradox.
