Value of week:
Unique
Message from Mr Snell
Well here we are at the end of Term 5! I can't believe that we're almost through the whole school year! As you know, our value this week has been 'Unique' and in my assembly on Monday, we talked about what it means to be unique - and how wonderful it is that we are all different. This led us on to discuss the importance of diversity and how Welton is such a welcoming place to be for everyone. We then talked about prejudice and, in particular, how we need to ensure we are always kind and considerate to others who may be different to ourselves. I'm delighted that your children demonstrate such kindness and support for each other at school and I hope that this is also evident in their lives outside of the school gates too. With this in mind, I'm delighted to let you know that we will be visited by children from the SAI International School in India on Friday 7th June - an amazing opportunity to meet and connect with people from another culture and to learn more about what life is like in this part of the world. We have been invited to take part in a collaborative piece of work about our grandparents (details below) so I hope you have the chance to work on this over the half term break next week. Exciting!
With thanks for your continued support - have a great half term break - and we look forward to seeing you back for Term 6 on Monday 3rd June (on time!).
Mr Snell :)
Grandparents Are The Best!
We have been invited to take part in an exciting mini project with children from Sai International School in India who are visiting Welton on Friday 7th June. The project is called Grandparents Are The Best! and is a chance to learn more about grandparents across two different parts of the world. Children from Sai and Welton have been asked to find out about their grandparents and write this down ready to be shared in a collaborative book. All children from Year R to Year 6 are invited to take part over the half term break. Here are some ideas to get you started:
Write a fact file about a grandparent - who they are, what they do...
Interview a grandparent to find out about a story or recipe that they like.
Draw a picture of a grandparent.
Find out what life was like when a grandparent was younger.
We hope your child will take part! When completed, please either print and bring to school on Monday 3rd June or email to the school office (office@weltonprimaryschool.co.uk). We can then put them together in an exciting collaborative book and share them with our Indian friends.
Sports Clubs Next Term
We are excited to announce the after school sports clubs for term 6 with our Up and Under coach. This term, children from reception through to Y6 can attend either of the clubs. Each session costs £3.50 so over next term which is a 7 week term, the cost will be £24.50. You can book your place on ParentPay from 3pm on Monday 3rd June.
Wednesdays (3.15- 4.15)- Tri Golf
Thursdays (3.15-4.15) - Cricket
Rags2Riches
On Friday 28th June, we will be having another Rags2Riches collection. Please keep hold of any unwanted clothes and we will send bags home in the coming weeks. Please send in as much as you can: a couple of kilograms go a long way! :)
Nursery Requests
Our school nursery are on the look out for old pots, pans, jugs and kitchen utensils (please no knives). If you have any, please bring it into the school office. These things are great for the mud kitchen and also the water play area. We would really appreciate any of these things.
Illness and Attendance at Welton
As many of you will be aware, attendance in school is a high priority for children for many reasons: academic progress, social and emotional development and the development of life skills. We know that so many of you do your utmost to ensure that your children are in school each and every day. For this, we thank you.
We also know that illness cannot be helped. Sometimes children need to be off because they are unwell and are unable to come to school for this very reason.
However, we are finding that more and more children are off school for holidays, that are unauthorised, and because they may be feeling a little under the weather. We also find, that sometimes, when someone is off there is no message given to the school even when contacted. These are then classed as unauthorised absences. 10 or more unauthorised absences potentially lead to a fine taking place and persistent unauthorised absences above this could lead to court proceedings having to happen.
This next term, we will be stepping up in tackling our attendance further. If school is not phoned by 8:30, or we have reason to believe that a child may be on holiday/away for the day, we may visit the home to check on them. This will involve us needing to see the child to ensure they are safe and well. Similarly, if a child has had a number of days off due to illness, we may ask to have evidence that they have been seen by a GP.
Please ensure you are phoning the school if your child is off because they are unwell. This is incredibly important. Thank you to everyone who does this. It is incredibly important to us so we can ensure children make the most of their education, all year round.

Midsomer Norton Summer Art Trail
Over the last few weeks our Reception and Year 1 classes have been busy creating artwork for the Midsomer Norton Summer Art Trail. This year, the theme is food! Reception have been decorating paper plates with the vegetables from the story 'Oliver's Vegetables' by Vivian French and Alison Bartlett. Year 1 have been making delicious looking doughnuts, pizzas and fruit, using paper plates. We used various techniques of printing, painting and collage.
The Art Trail will be running for the next two weeks, so look out for our artwork in shop windows in town!

Online Safety
Please find information below around how to set up a Nintendo switch to ensure it is safe for all children and some top tips for managing screen time over half term.
Nintendo Switch Parental Controls
All tech devices come with parental controls, but they're not always easy to find or understand and they can differ quite significantly from device to device.
The Nintendo Switch, which is a very popular device, has a range of parental controls such as browser access, restricting games based on age, chat settings and more and more.
Internet Matters have a great guide for parents which can be downloaded and sent out or added to your school website. Click HERE for more information.
Managing Screen Time
With half-term almost upon us some parents will be looking for guidance about helping their children to develop a healthy relationship with technology.
Internet Matters have a series of tips and guides to help with this including setting up parental controls, finding other activities to do, agreeing on boundaries and more. You can view the guidance HERE.

Ofsted - The Big Listen
Ofsted - The Big Listen – we want to hear your views!
The National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) is carrying out a short survey on behalf of Ofsted. We want to hear from parents/carers of children who are under 18 years old. It should only take around 10 minutes to complete. We are interested in views of, and any experiences with, Ofsted, including Ofsted’s inspection, regulation and reporting practices. We really want to hear from a wide range of parents and carers, even if you don’t have strong opinions about Ofsted, or haven’t had any experience of Ofsted. The survey findings will be used to help Ofsted improve the way it works in the future.
