Value of week: Unqiue

Message from Mr Lyle

What a fantastic end to Term 3. Even though this term is a short one, there certainly have been lots of things happening: Geography and Eco week, Bath Rugby Events, and much, much more. It is a real pleasure to wander around and see the school buzzing with learning and excitement. The children really are being their best every day.

As we move into Term 4, there are lots of exciting things to look out for, including World Book Day and STEM week. We are very excited to to be hosting these as part of your children's learning.

This week has been Wellbeing Week and it has been wonderful seeing children and adults thinking about wellbeing and what that looks like. Wellbeing is something Welton celebrates and ecourages passionately and it has been brilliant seeing children thinking about putting this first. This was topped off with a fabulous disco event last night. Thank you to our wonderful PTFA for all of their effort with this. We couldn't do things without you.

As always, thank you to the children for their hard work, but also the parents for your support. Have a lovely half term break and see you on the 19th!

World Book Day - Thursday 7th March

For World Book Day, this year, we would like everyone to dress as an adjective! Costumes can be as simple or as imaginative as you like. It could be green, glittery, bright, fluffy, elegant, strong, or heroic. Below are a few ideas but there are lots of others online.

We can’t wait to see what you choose!

In addition to dressing up, we would like to invite parents into classes at 3pm, to share short stories with groups of children.

Welcome Backs and Goodbyes

As we mentioned last week, we are very much looking forward to having Mrs Hollidge back in Year 5 after half term. I know she loved popping in and spending some time in class yesterday.

We would also like to let you know that we will be saying goodbye to Mrs Cockerill, who will be leaving us at the end of February. She has been a wonderful member of the team as both a lunchtime supervisor and teaching assistant over the years and she will be missed by many! We are sure you will join us in wishing her all the best as she moves onto a new job in Screwfix and thank her for all of the hard work she has done for your children over the years! I'm sure we will still be seeing lots of her.

Illness and Attendance at Welton

School Car Park

Please be reminded that the school car park is not to be used to park at the beginning and end of the day. This is due to children and adults moving around the car park and to ensure safety of all.

Please endeavour to park elsewhere or walk, where you can.

Thank you

Clubs for next term

Term 4- Coach led clubs

We are pleased to announce that there will be 2 new clubs starting after the half term holidays and they are very exciting ones at that.

The clubs are run by our Up and Under coach and run from 3.15-4.15. Clubs are bookable via parentpay from today onwards.

Wednesday- Y2-Y6 Laser Tag (£24 for 6 weeks, 20 spaces) FULLY BOOKED

Thursday-  KS2 Basketball Club (£21 for 6 weeks, 20 spaces)

NB Laser tag is slightly higher due to the resourcing and equipment needed to run the club.

Wellbeing Wednesday - Dodgeball

It was fantastic to see everyone having a great time playing Dodgeball on Wednesday. Children came back into class with flushed faces and eager to talk about the fun they had had together. It was also really lovely to see children supporting and encouraging each other even when their team didn't win!

Well done to our Public Speakers

On Tuesday, three of our Year 6 girls took part in a Public Speaking contest against 8 other schools, debating and sharing their views around a specific topic. They had 6 minutes to put foreward the positives and negatives. Their topic was, 'Should McDonalds come to Midsomer Norton?' The Girls represented the school valiantly and they did a marvellous job in sharing their views with such clarity. We are so proud of them all! Well done Aislinn, Abbie and Ava. Superstars!

Safer Internet Day 2024

This week, we have been discussing the importance of staying safe online. The focus for this year was 'Inspiring Change.' Children spent time discussing how they can make the internet a better place to be. We also discussed how technology is changing and how we harness things such as AI is for them to think about as the people of the future.

Alongside this, we talked about using social media and the age limits for this. It was interesting to hear the changes to law around proving and providing evidence of your age for these. We hope to see this make a positive change in the future to support young people, particularly with mental health.

We were so proud of the children, showing such great responsibility and how they can be responsible online.

Can you help?

As part of our learning at Welton, we enjoy talking with the children about careers and jobs. An exciting part of this is when visitors come to school to talk about what they do. If you would like to come into school to talk with the children about your job, please let the school office know. You may like to ask your child about their topics this term to see if your job relates directly to their learning!

Bus Fares and Birthday Bus

Dear B&NES Schools,

RE: West of England Bus Fares and ‘Birthday Bus’

I am writing to remind you of the current bus initiatives in B&NES that you might use with your schools.

There are currently two bus fares initiatives, a capped fixed price of £2 for an adult single and a reduced single fare of £1 for children aged 5-15, with most bus public services across the West of England, although it excludes special school and college buses. This is in place until the end of March 2025, click travelwest for more details.

There is also a ‘Birthday Bus’ initiative, where you can apply for free bus travel across the West of England, if you live within the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority area or in North Somerset. It’s valid for the whole calendar month of your birthday and available to all ages, so staff and students can take advantage of the scheme.

Goto my school travel plan resource page to find out about what travel and supporting initiatives you might link public bus services to.

Best regards,

Richard Pitman

Half Term in Bath

Half-term at the Roman Baths and Victoria Art Gallery

Head to the Roman Baths and Victoria Art Gallery this February half-term for a fun-filled week packed with activities for the whole family.

At the Roman Baths, young visitors can find out what it was like to be a child in Roman times. Join one of the daily craft sessions (Monday-Friday) to find out more and make a bulla – a locket that Roman children wore around their necks to protect them from evil spirits.

Pick up one of the free spotting trails and explore the historic site and collection with the help of some friendly Roman characters. There are two trails available, tailored for younger and older children.

Don’t miss the brand-new Roman Baths activity book for children, available in the Roman Baths Shop (£5), which explains the history of the Roman Baths in an easy to understand way for children aged seven to 11. The colourful book is filled with interactive games, activities and stickers – perfect for kids to continue their interest in all things Roman when they get home.

At the Victoria Art Gallery, visitors of all generations will enjoy the The Wonderful World of the Ladybird Book Artists exhibition, which features hundreds of vintage Ladybird books and original artworks from 1940 to 1975, as well as a special ‘Coco the Caravan’ reading snug for children.

There’s a free ladybird trail, which includes animals and vehicles for children to spot in the exhibition as well as ladybird-themed colouring and activities. Hands-on family craft sessions will run from Tuesday to Friday, 10am-2pm, where kids can create a ladybird with moving wings, and learn all about the ladybird lifecycle.

Free admission for Bath & North East Somerset residents with a Discovery Card. Victoria Art Gallery sessions are free to all. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Knife Crime Awareness for Parents and Carers

Knife Crime Awareness Event for Parents and Carers

The B&NES Violence Reduction Partnership (VRP) are running a series of knife crime awareness events throughout February and March.

These events will take place in schools across the area. The first event will be held at Writhlington School on February 22nd (17.30-19.30), followed by Hayesfield Girls School on February 29th (18.00-20.00) and Cameley CEVC Primary School on March 18th (18.00-20.00).

The events are aimed at parents and carers who would like to know more about the dangers of knife crime or are concerned that their children are at risk. They aim to increase awareness of key issues surrounding knife crime, empowering you and your children to make informed and positive decisions to stay safe.

You will have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers with lived experience who have been personally affected by knife crime. There will also be a presentation by Street Doctors followed by a panel discussion with the opportunity to ask questions.

The Bath & North East Somerset Violence Reduction Partnership (VRP) is a multi-agency partnership that aims to prevent and reduce violence in the area. We work to understand and address the root causes of violence, to prevent further violent crimes from occurring in the future. We provide resources and support the work of professionals and community groups who help children at risk or involved in serious violence.
