Week 3
Another busy week in Year 6! We are all fully back into the swing of learning and routine now and Year 6 are proving just what fantastic role models and advocates for the school they are.
This week we have been doing:
English- writing our action narratives. I have been so impressed by how carefully children have been thinking about these and how meticulously they have been with their editting.
Maths- We have been working on our 4 operations, this week focusing specifically on prime numbers, factors, multiples and square or cubed numbers.
Guided Reading- We have focused on a non fiction text this week, identifying new vocabulary and using our skimming and scanning skills to retrieve information from a text.
Science- This week, we have been naming the 4 chambers of the heart, as well as some of the main blood vessels including Vena Cava, Aorta, Pulmonary Vein and Pulmonary Artery.
Geography- Identifying social, economic and environmental impacts of an earthquake.
Music- Keyboard Lesson 2.
We have also had the opportunity to celebrate European Day of Languages this week by carrying out a variety of language based activities! This has included visiting our Welton French Cafe, pointilism art, working on French dictionary skills and learning how to greet one another and say our name in German!
Week 1
What a great start we have had to Year 6! All children have come back to school refreshed and ready to learn. Outlined below is some of the learning we have done this week:
English- We have been looking at an action narrative and have used a range of stimulus to inspire us, including the novel: The Girl who Stole and Elephant, as well as looking at chase scenes from Tintin and Paddington. These have helped us gain a broader idea of what makes a chase scene effective. Within this, we have looked at covering our basics in our writing, including capitals and full stops.
Guided Reading- We have been having a deeper look at the novel: The Nowhere Emporium. This is our class novel and we have been studying the prologue to gain a deeper insight into some of the vocabulary used and how the author has used specific techniques to try and hook in the reader.
Maths- We have been recapping our Place Value knowledge, identifying place value of numbers up to 10,000,000 as well as ensuring we can write these numbers with numerals and with words.
Science- We have been looking at the circulatory system, this week looking specifically at the purpose of veins, arteries and capilleries.
Geography- We have identified the 4 layers of the earth as well as the tectonic plates.
Computing- We look at the meaning of IP addresses and the need for computing protocols.
Art- As we do the start of every year, the children have had the opportunity to complete a self-portrait! This is a nice way for the children to see how their artistic skills have improved since the previous year.
Meet our wonderful team.
Miss Plaskitt
This is my fourth year of teaching here at Welton and I am looking forward to working in Year 6. I have a passion for reading, particularly reading for pleasure and think there are so many wonderful stories for us to explore! I can't wait for all of the Year 6 experiences, especially camp, and I can't wait to make Year 6 a fun and memorable last year of Primary school.
Joining Miss Plaskitt in the classroom will be Mrs Green. Mrs Green worked with Eagles class last year and is a familiar face around Welton Primary School.
