Take a look at what we have been doing this term
Spring term 1 week 3
What a busy week! We have been looking at using commas to avoid ambiguity in English lessons and have got to grips with some tricky vocabulary. In Maths, we are persevering with the short division method and in History we have taken a look at the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles - evidence of what life was like. In computing we have been coding a micro:bit.
On Wednesday, we spent the morning with students from Bath Spa University who did some drama with us around the theme of Space. See photos below.
Spring term 1 week 2
This week we have been writing narratives about alien invasions, multiplying 4-digits by 2-digits, learning about the Hadith in RE, improving our swimming skills, making gestural marks in Art plus lots more. One of the writing skills in year 5 is to be able to include relative clauses in sentences. Please ask your child about this. If they are unsure, I recommend spending some time looking at BBC Bitesize.
Spring term 1 week 1
Welcome back and Happy New Year!
We have started back with enthusiasm and determination to learn and do well this year. In Maths, we have been tackling some tricky calculations. Please ask your child how we multiply a 3-digit number by a 1-digit number and for some of us a 2-digit number by a 2-digit number. Stick with it year 5 and we will get there!
In English, we have linked our first writing unit with our Science topic of 'Earth and Space'. We will be writing a narrative similar to the example we have been using to improve our grammar and punctuation.
TRIP - We have an exciting trip planned. Please return the form asap.
Homework - please see the tab 'Useful information and Home Learning' to see what we do for homework. A big well done to the 4 children who completed the spellings homework without the sheet.
Autumn term 2 week 6
A huge thank you to all parents who joined us for 'Parents and PE'. The children loved having the 'extra' members of the class. Afrer the PE they all had the opportunity to try something new - lots of different dried fruits. Some of our class have now discovered they enjoy dates, raisins, dried pineapple and apricots.
Autumn term 2 week 5
In PSHE, we have been discussing ' Does money matter?'. We placed things e.g. family, pets, freedom, clean water, friends in a continuum of happiness. We then compared it with a child growing up (and working) in a developing country. This led to some great discussions about what is important to us.
Autumn term week 10
A busy second week of the term for Hawk Class. Today, following a celebration assembly, we discussed' Children in Need' - about the money that we donate and about who it might help. We then had a wellbeing session where we discussed our mental health and the strategies we could use to improve it. We also had toast and hot chocolate. Earlier in the week we have had a great assembly from Music Miniatures - it has really inspired us to become musicians. Anti-bullying week has seen us talk about racism, name-calling and rumour spreading. From this we created some 'snakes and ladder' style games. We have been practising for our trumpet performance that is scheduled for next week. In DT, we have been exploring 'doodlebugs' and next week we will be looking and thinking about how we can alter them for a purpose. In English, we have been writing setting descriptions and in Maths we have started our fractions unit.
Autumn term week 9
Hawk class have had the first of their Forest School sessions. The photos are evidence of all they had fun learning. We have also begun a new English unit - a setting description, which we have linked to our History topic of the Maya civilisation. In Maths we have been learning about prime numbers, square numbers, cubed numbers and being able to multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000. In PSHE we are celebrating differences. In DT we revised our knowledge of electrical systems.
Autumn term week 8
A big thank you to those of you who attended parents' evenings this week. I hope you had the chance to look at the fantastic biographies we published and put on display for you. We finished this term with some 'slow writes'. We focused on a particular technique in a sentence at a time. Drafting our sentences on the table enabled us to see our ideas in a different format.
Autumn term week 7
The highlight of this week was definitely our trip to Mendip Golf Club. We have had 6 weeks of lessons, from Tom Snelling, at school, where we learnt the basic skills of golf. Our final session this week, was a trip to the driving range and chipping green at Mendip Golf Club. Please keep a look out for the voucher to use at the drivign range.
Autumn term week 6
Please ask your child about dissolving. Can they describe a solution to you?
Autumn term week 5
In English, we have been analysing and writing poetry an in Maths, we have focused on addition and subtraction methods. Science was a hands-on lesson with magnets, as we identified the different properties of materials.
Autumn term week 4
This week began with us voting in our student council members. A big well done to all those pupils who were brave enough to stand in front of the class and tell us why we should vote for them. Winners will be announced next week.
We have come to the end of our 'Place Value' unit this week and have created posters showing some of the things we have been learning about. In English, we completed our narratives and in Art we had fun creating 3D art installations.
Autumn term week 3
Our week started with a visit to the 'I can & I am' bus. All children thought it was a good way to spend the morning - making pizzas and having a good chat about well-being with friends.
In English, we have just finished all the preparation for our story writing. Next week, we will begin to pull it all together. In Maths we have been ordering and comparing numbers to 1,000,000.
Please encourage your child to use their DoodleMaths, DoodleEnglish, TT Rockstars and Reading Plus accounts as much as possible. Only a few minutes a day of each will close some gaps in their learning.
Statutory spellings for y3/4 and year 5/6 have been sent home today. Please help your child to learn them - these are in addition to our weekly spellings but will not be tested.
Autumn term week 2
Another fantastic week. We have been adding sections to our adventure stories in English lessons. On Monday, we will focus on dialogue. Thursday saw us split into groups and have our first golf lessons.
Thank you to those who were able to attend our 'Meet the Teacher' meeting. If you were unable to attend, please see the welcome letter from me for information - it was sent via a text link last week.
Autumn term week 1
All of year 5 have settled back into school really well. Please take time to explore the rest of this class website to find termly overviews and the year 5 expectations for English and Maths.
In English, we have started looking at and adventure story set in a rainforest and on Wednesdsay we did a bit of role play for it. In Maths, we are focusing on place value and ensuring we understand numbers up to 100,000.
