Autumn Term
Welcome to Eagle class!
We have lots of learning to do this term and we are going to be diving straight in with our place value of numbers up to 10,000,000, writing formal letters using a range of grammatical features and learning about WW2 and natural disasters. See below for a full overview of this term's learning. We do also have camp this term which is very exciting! It is going to be a busy term settling into routines and getting our heads back into our learning, but I have no doubt that Eagle class will get on with this with ease. I am very much looking forward to being your class teacher again!
Term 1
Week 7-
Another busy week in Eagle class! This week's learning includes:
English- For Black History Month we have chosen a significant figure to look at. We are looking at Harriet Tubman and her inspiring journey on the Underground railroad. From our learning, we are aiming to produce a short narrative to display next week for parents to see.
Maths- We have done lots of practice this week on 4 digit x 2 digit multiplication. Children also have this to practice for their homework this week. We have since moved on to short division and will be looking at long division for the first time next week.
Geography- This week we looked at the impact of earthquakes: socially, economically and environmentally.
Music- We have continued our clarinet lessons and children can now play to E, D and C notes on the clarinet. Should children return a signed letter, they will be able to bring their clarinets home with them!
Week 6-
What an eventful week we have had in Eagle class!
This week's learning includes:
English- We have been writing our diary entries and using the grammar we have practised during this block of learning. This has included: modal verbs, passive voice, noun phrases, parenthesis and direct speech.
Maths- We have continued our 'addition, subtraction, multiplication and division' learning, looking at prime numbers, square and cubed numbers as well as rules of divisibility.
History- We continued our learning on WW2, looking at how WW2 began and the countries which were invaded first. We discussed the reasons for which they were invaded and Great Britain's resistance to this.
Science- The blood's journey around the body.
PE- In dodgeball we have been practising defensive skills such as using the ball to block the ball from the attackers. In rugby, we used the tags to practice tagging and dodging.
RE- We have continued our learning about Hinduism and this week, looked at the idea of Ahimsa. Children wrote some lovely acrostic poems which show the meaning behind Ahimsa.
French- We have learnt some phrases which show our personalities. A lot of these are cognate and children were easily able to translate their meaning.
Big 'well done' to Year 6 for their Harvest performance in church on Thursday as well!
Week 5-
This week in Eagles class we have done:
English- In English we have started looking at a diary entry based on a soldier in WW2. This links to our history topic. Within this so far we have looked at: expanded noun phrases, modal verbs and the passive voice. I was extremely impressed by children's understanding and application of the passive voice as this was the first time they have looked at it.
Maths- We have been focusing on multiples and factors this week, identifying common multiples and factors of 2 given numbers.
Geography- We started our topic on 'natural disasters' and children have labelled the layers of the earth, as well as the tectonic plates.
Computing- We have been looking at how data is broken down and sent across networks in packets. We tried to send some packets ourselves through the class!
Science- Continuing our work on the circulatory system, children looked at the different chambers of the heart, labelling the left and right ventricles and atriums.
Music- Our clarinet lessons continue! Children are starting to make good sounds with the clarinets and have learnt the e and the d note. These should be coming home with children next week pending filling in a form.
Week 3-
This week, Year 6 have had their first go at some practice SATs papers. This is quite early in the year, however it has been important and informative to grasp where their gaps are so we can target these. Aside from these, children have also done:
English- writing our formal letters. Children's letters of complaints have been imaginative and humorous! We have endeavoured to incorporate our grammatical features in here. I was particularly impressed this week with children's use of the subjunctive! This is tricky and the Year 6s handled it well.
PE- We have been able to start our rugby topic and carried on with our dodgeball topic, thinking about best ways to dodge.
Music- We have started our clarinet lessons! Children will, in due course, be bringing these home to practice. This week, we learnt how to put them together and tried making a noise in them. This was trickier than we thought!
Children also had the opportunity to take part in the I can/I am bus on Monday! They made pizzas, which were devoured, and thought about ways that they could build their self-esteem by focusing on those things that they are good at. This was a really nice and meaningful activity for children!
Week 2
Another successful week as we settle into routine in year 6. This week we have done:
English- We have started thinking about writing a formal letter of complaint about terrible holidays! Considering the things we want to include in this letter, we have looked at: figurative language, relative clauses, parenthesis and expanded noun phrases.
Maths- We have continued our work on place value of numbers up to 10,000,000, rounding them and comparing and ordering them.
History- We have started looking at WW2 and dictator's rise to power. Children had really good discussions around this and were keen to find out more.
RE- We have started our new topic about Hinduism and, this week, explored the idea of 'pluralism'. This was quite tricky for children to get their heads around but they did an excellent job with asking questions to clarify and understand this.
Computing- We have had a look at IP addresses and how this link to web domains and servers.
PE- Our PE topics this term are Dodgeball and Rugby. Unfortunately, this week has been particularly wet and we have struggled to make start on our rugby topic. As such, we have had plenty of dodgeball practice and games in the hall this week.
Week 1
A massive 'well done!' to all of Year 6 for settling in so well this week! We have eased ourselves into the week with a range of subjects and activities. These have included:
English- going over the basics. This included basic punctuation, capital letters and full stops and a recap of grammatical features from KS2.
Maths- Looking at place value of numbers up to 10,000,000. This has meant identifying place value of numbers in words and numerals using a range of representations, such as part whole models, bar models and place value counters and charts.
Science- Children have started looking at the circulatory system and we have started looking at the function of the blood vessels.
Art- We have done our self-portraits this week. We do this every year at the start of the year in order to see our progression of our drawing skills over the years.
Children have been given a spelling and arithmetic homework to complete by next Thursday.
Some children are also keen on being house captains which is great to see! I have asked children who are interested to have a go at writing a short speech to present to their houses. We would like these to be ready to go by Wednesday for children to present at school. Please support your children with writing these!
