11th and 18th July 2025
The last two weeks have gone so quickly in Kingfisher class! We visited Stonehenge and loved learning about Neolithic life and pre-history. We also loved being able to visit the stones themselves and see them up close. This week, we have been learning about the Qur'an and the journey of arive. Following this, in DT, we then looked at seasonality and cooking using local produce. The children loved their apple muffins! Have a lovely summer break. Keep up the Doodle maths and Doodle English. Well done Kingfishers! Mrs Allen and Mr Lyle
4th July 2025
Over the last couple of weeks we have started to learn about light. We have talked about how we see and we have identified sources of light. This week we were investigating how shadows are formed. We discovered that our shadows change throughout the day. We used the words opaque, transparent and transluscent, and looked at the shadows these objects made.
27th June 2025
On Thursday we visited The Orchid Project at Writhlington School. We learned about tiny orchid seeds, so small they looked like powder, in the propagation laboratory, and studied some under a microscope. We visited the greenhouses and saw the huge variety of orchids that grow in each temperature zone. We even got to pot one of our own! We also learned about xylem and looked at slices of celery under a microscope to see how water is transported through the stem.
Kingfisher Class, you were tremendous representatives for our school. We are very proud of you!
20th June 2025
At the start of the week, when it was much cooler, we took our maths learning outside. We were focussing on measuring accurately and using that skill to draw polygons. We also made our shapes on geoboards using elastic bands.
Today, we met some children from a school in Spain, via Google Meet. We found out all about their school and the surrounding area, and we told them some facts about Welton.
13th June 2025
There has been a fantastic array of crazy hair on display in Kingfisher Class today, as well as lots of people breaking the rules in non school uniform, tattoos and even make up!
Despite it being Break the Rules day, we have been hard at work retelling the story of the Dreamgiver. So far we have set the scene for the story and described the mysterious character using lots of noun phrases and language features such as personification and similes. We can't wait to read the finished stories!
6th June 2025
Life this term has started with a bang. The children have shown what fantastic learners they can be learning about a variety of things. The water cycle, time, Islam and much more. We have been so impressed with their attitude. The week ended with our final session with Bath Rugby. Children worked as part of a team to collaborate and evade their peers. I was so impressed with their attitude and resilence. Well done to all of you. A special mention to the many who completed the Spring Challenge! We are so proud of you!
23rd May 2025
In DT this week we have been using code to program and control a microbit. We were able to change the display and the sound, and even use the light sensor so that our display came on when it became dark. We have been very impressed with your efforts Kingfisher Class!
Today we had a fantastic time at sports day, and the colour run at the end was definitely a highlight! We will share more photos once we have compiled them all.
9th May 2025
This week, Kingfisher Class joined forces to unveil a rather curious creation—their 11-week-old mummified oranges! After weeks of waiting (and wondering!), the results did not disappoint. The children were fascinated to see how the oranges had changed over time—and let’s just say, the smell was a particular highlight! It’s safe to say we won’t forget that part anytime soon...
In English, the children have also been hard at work researching and writing their very own fact files all about the Alps. From snow-capped peaks to mountain wildlife, they’ve shown fantastic enthusiasm and effort throughout the project. We’ve been so impressed with their positive attitudes
2nd May 2025
It's been a fab week in Kingfisher this week. The sun has been shining and the children have been working incredibly hard. In maths, we have started learning about money... yes that thing we don't see very often any more. The children have been working hard thinking about what coins can be put together to make certain amounts and converting between pounds and pence. We have even been including decimals too!
In English, we have been learning about clauses and conjunctions and how we form sentences. We have made the most of the beautiful weather and been taking our learning outside! We are looking forward to reading their fact files over the weekend. We've also been busy learning about publishing in computing and cricket in PE with the support of Frome college.
Next week, we are excited to welcome Miss Kenward to our class. Miss Kenward will be with us for the next 8 weeks as she works towards becoming a teacher. We know the children will make her feel welcome and we look forward to celebrating all things Welton and Kingfisher class with her!
Have a great bank holiday weekend and see you Tuesday!
25th April 2025
We have had a lovely first week back after the holiday! On Thursday, we enjoyed listening to stories during our visit to the library. In PE, we have been learning about striking and fielding games and are beginning to play rounders. And in English, we have been researching The Alps, ready to write fact files next week.
Well done to everyone who has already completed the Doodle Maths Spring Challenge! There is still some time to collect more stars if you haven't quite got enough yet.
Thank you for all of the photos of you reading during the holidays. It was lovely to see you all continuing to read and having lots of fun!
5th April 2025
What an excting way to end the term! The children in Kingfisher have been extremely busy looking at adding and subtracting fractions and writing formal letters to Mr Williams this week. We were so impressed with the language and persuasion they showed when writing these. In Art, the children finished creating their canopic jars linked to our history of the Ancient Egyptians - these were fantastic. We then finished the term off with an Easter egg hunt before saying goodbye to Mrs Taylor. Have a wonderful Easter and see you on the 22nd!
28th March 2025
Kingfisher Class had a fantastic trip to Root Connections this week. We went on a walk through the woods and collected interesting objects. We then mapped out our route, adding drawings of the objects we found at each point. After collecting vegetables from the poly tunnels in the garden, we made some leek and potato soup. Everyone was very good at trying something new!
Well done Kingfisher Class, you were fantastic representatives for our school, and your enthusiasm for the outdoors was wonderful to see.
14th March 2025
It has been all about Ancient Egypt in Year 3 this week! On Monday, we learned all about Ancient Egyptian beliefs - their gods and goddesses, and the mummification process. We then mummified oranges! We scooped out the inside, dried them out and filled them with salt before wrapping them in bandages. We will find out how thorough we were in a couple of weeks time.
On Thursday, in art, we learned about papyrus and recreated the process with paper strips. Next week we will decorate them with designs inspired by Egyptian art.
7th March 2025
What a fab week in Kingfisher this week. Children have learnt about ordering fractions, reading scales and creating branching databases. We've also looked at the terms import and export and how we find out where goods come from. They have also enjoyed learning about what's inside an Egyptian tomb. We even got to join a live chat with Michael Rosen on World Book Day! We loved seeing them dressing up as their favourite characters or adjectives. Have a lovely weekend!
28th February
In science this week we have been comparing how far toy cars move on different surfaces. We designed an investigation, and thought carefully about what we needed to change and what we needed to keep the same. We measured carefully and recorded our results in a table. We also said goodbye to Ruby today! We hope she has a fantastic time at her new school and hope she continues to shine and fly the Welton flag wherever she goes! Good luck, Ruby!
14th February
This week, we have been busy exploring friction in science and how different materials move on specific surfaces. Alongside this, we were joined by Lizzie from Bath Spa University who delivered a workshop around Rivers and the Iron Age. Kingfishers loved immersing themselves in the drama and role play whilst focusing on the water cycle and how archaeologists discover lost artefacts and how they infer to what it may be used for. Well done for all of your hard work this term, Kingfisher class. See you soon :)
7th February
This week has been Wellbeing Week across the school. We have taken part in lots of activities to help us improve our mental health and encourage mindfulness. On Wednesday morning we spent lots of time outside in the fresh air. We listened to nature, made clay faces for the trees and cooked bread on the fire. In the afternoon we took part in a range of activities from physical circuits to painting, and listening to stories to hand massage. We have all enjoyed starting each day with some toast!

We’ve also been impressed by the children’s attitude to learning in Writing this week. Their resilience and creativity shine through as they continue to embody our school values in everything they do.
Wishing you all a lovely weekend!

We have been combining our history and DT learning this week by making a stone age settlement. We thought about the 3D shapes we needed to use and how to use a net to make them. We were aiming to make our structures as stable as possible.
Have a lovely Christmas holiday everyone!
13 December
This week, we have been incredibly busy. We've been learning about division and multiplication and writing our own instructions based on how to make a bronze age axe. We also continued to learn about Europe and used an atlas and compass directions to identify different countries. We showed great collaboration to perform Christmas songs and our very own traditional song. Many thanks to Mr Hockey and the PTFA for helping to make this happen!
29th November
Thank you to everyone who came into school on Thursday afternoon to spend some time reading with Kingfisher Class. In Year 3, we love stories, and spend lots of time reading and talking about books, characters and language. We Read for Pleasure in class every day, and it is a time in the day when we can just relax and enjoy being read to by an adult. Our current Reading for Pleasure book is The Wild Way Home by Sophie Kirtley.
Although your child may be feeling more confident as a reader and may choose to read to themselves more regularly, please continue to share stories together and read aloud to your child. Nurturing a love of stories opens up new worlds for children. It gives them the opportunity to use their imagination to explore new ideas, visit new places and meet new characters. Interestingly, reading for pleasure also improves children’s well-being and empathy. It helps them to understand their own identity, and gives them an insight into the world and the views of others.
Thank you for your continued support with reading.
22nd November
In DT this week, we have been exploring nets, and understanding how a 2D shape can be folded to make a 3D shape. We are going to be using what we have found out to inform our building designs in the coming weeks.
In science, we have started to study rocks, and began by making careful observations about their appearance and deciding how we might group the rocks.
As part of our assemblies and during PSHE, we have been learning about road safety. All of Kingfisher Class demonstrated excellent road safety on our walk to the library on Thursday!
15th November
We've had a brilliant week in Kingfisher this week. We've taken column subtraction by storm, started learning our 4x tables, and even started writing our own stories about the book Journey by Aaron Becker. Not only this, we have also taken part in tennis in PE, learnt about how we use evidence to find out about the past and expanded our knowledge about stable structures in DT.
We topped it off today with Layer up; Power down day followed by a Children in Need Ramble! Well done to the whole class who showed all of our school values this week! Keep up the hard work.
Don't forget your homework this week!

Thank you all for attending our maths workshop this week, joining in with our learning and seeing how we use the concrete, pictorial and abstract approach in maths to promote mastery of the maths curriculum.
As you could see, we build on a thorough understanding of the basic maths facts - counting in 1s, and 10s, number bonds, and place value. Any time that you can spend at home revising these facts is hugely beneficial.
4th October
This week, in English, we have been writing newspaper reports about the discovery of the Stone Age settlement, Skara Brae. We will be publishing them next week and are looking forward to sharing them with you.
We have also been very busy creating our festive artwork for our Cauliflower Cards Christmas cards. They will be coming home next week, so look out for those!

This week, as part of our harvest celebrations, every year group has studied a poem and performed it during today's assembly. Kingfisher Class learned the poem 'Harvest'. During the performance every member of the class recited their lines off by heart, confidently and clearly. We are very proud of their efforts!
Here is a video of them practising.
20th September
In Year 3, we started Djembe drumming with Mr Hockey this week. We were blown away by the children's rhythm and collaboration in creating sound. They had a fabulous time. We will be doing this for the next 9 weeks. We can't wait to show you our final pieces. Next week, we will be busy practising our Harvest Poem. Take a look next week to see what we have performed!
