Weekly Updates

Term 4 week 3

A big thank you to all who brought in containers, tubes, card and various other things.  We have been busy making our miniature playgrounds and are getting pretty good with a glue gun.

Term 4 week 2

Well done to all of year 6 who have been working hard during our assessments this week.   I will be able to share their results with you during parents' evening later this term.

World Book Day on Thursday saw some great costumes come into school.  It really is great to see so many children with a love of reading.

Term 4 week 1

Our art work has been sent home - watch out it's got a bit of charcoal on it as we got to grips with Chiraoscuro.

Term 3 week 6

What another great week had in year 6.  We have finished writing our descriptions of a desert, got to grips with 3 decimal place numbers, started using Reading Plus, used charcoal in our Art lessons and written sentences in French to name a few things.

It was lovely to see so many parents attend the SATS information meeting on Monday evening.  If you were unable to attend, please see the slides below for some information.  Oue spellings fiir next term went home today but can also be found below.

Term 3 week 5

This week we have spent a lot of time doing things for Children's Mental Health Week.  We have come away from our weekly timetable to really think about our mental wellbeing and to take part in different activities.

A lot of time was finding facts about Malala Yousafzai; she is a truly inspirational person. Please see our photos below for some ouf our activities.

Term 3 week 4

During the school day, we are trying really hard to get every y6 child to complete a DoodleMaths assignment/Power Up/ or x-aday.  We are also doing 2 'garages' and a soundcheck on TTRS.  Please continue this at home - daily would be great.

Next week is Children's Mental Health week.  See below for ideas.

Term 3 week 3

This week and last week we have been doing drama in our English lessons.  On Wednesday, we were lucky to have students from Baths Spa University working with us.

Term 3 week 2

This week has seen us get out the electrical equipment and remind ourselves of the symbols used for a cell, a buzzer, a bulb, a motor and wire.

Term 3 week 1

I'm delighted to tell you that we have Mrs Hollidge joining us in year 6 on Wednesday afternoons and I'd like to welcome Mrs Heard to the team.  Mrs Heard will be teaching Art this term on Thursday afternoons.

This week in English, we have been recapping the rules of dialogue and putting it into practise.  In Maths, we have been introduced to ratio.  Please see below for some photos.

Homework hand-in day has changed.  To help us manage the marking and feedback of homework, we have decided to make Fridays our hand-in day.  Spellings will also be tested on Fridays and reading records checked for signature.  Please encourage your child to hand in their homework as soon as they have completed it.  Early handing in of homework (reading comprehension and Maths book) will be rewarded with housepoints.  If they are finding it tricky please ensure they ask us for help and don't forget we have a homework club available to those who need it.

Term 2 week 6

In Science, we have set up 'fair tests' to observe the growth of mould over time.  Over the next couple of weeks, your child will be collecting evidence based on their observations and recording it in their Science books.  Please ask them about it.

Term 2 week 5

We have finished writing our war time speeches.  Please see some examples below.

Term 2 week 4

In Science we are taking a closer look at 'Living things and their habitats'.  See below for some photos on how we would group some organisms.

Term 2 week 3

This week and over the next few we are taking a closer look at fractions.  So far we have compared fractions, but to do this we have had to understand equivalent fractions and how to change fractions to have the same numerator or denominator.  Please look at https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zhdwxnb for some extra ideas on how to learn more.  Also, please remember to log on to DoodleMaths and TTRockstars as much as possible.  Year 6 realise how important times tables  knowledge is for a lot of our curriculum: fractions included!

English lessons have seen us recap relative clauses and be introduced to passive voice.  See, if your child can remember where we might use passive voice, why and how? Our PSHE has seen us work with year 5 to do some anti-bullying week tasks.

See below for some photos of us using our knowledge of order of operations (BIDMAS).

Term 2 week 2

We began and ended this week with an art focus.  On Monday and Tuesday we used the ipads to create lots of digital images and on Friday we went outside and created some land art in the style of Any Goldsworthy.  We had a fun session outside and made the most of our school grounds: we collected leaves, sticks and other natural materials to create art.  We also planted lots of trees along the bank on the edge of the field.  Our session finished off with a hot chocolate and a biscuit before heading to the library to listen to some  readers from Starling Class.

Term 2 week 1

Welcome back.  Please see the 'Learning in year 6' tab for a term overview and spellings' lists for this term.

In our English lessons this term we will be using some of our history knowledge learnt last term and this.  Our writing will have a World War II focus to it and we start we a formal speech informing the people of Britain about the home front effort.

Maths lessons will have a fractions focus.  Please keep using DoodleMaths and TT Rockstars at home on a regular basis.  If you are confident with your times tables, it will help you with division facts and fractions.

w/e 25th October

What a term!  We have done so much.  A big thank you to all of you who managed to meet with me this week to discuss your child's progress and any support they need.  I look forward to greeting them all back into school after the break.

Please remember to read and have at least 3 signatures from home each week.  Maths and Reading comprehension homework was set on Monday and is due back the first Monday back.  DoodleMaths - 2 housepoints for every day that you use it this holiday.

See you all on the 4th November.

w/e 18th October

Year 6 had a fantastic time reconnecting with their Prague friends this week. We had a day trip to Bath where we had a tour guide who showed us around the sights of Bath. We then had a rather wet lunch in Victoria Park before going to the Roman Baths.

Thursday 10th October - Heatree Camp Day 4

Stream scrambling and big tree climbing.  Wahey!

Wednesday 9th October - Heatree Camp Day 3

What another fantastic day!  This morning we went on a 'Wilderness Adventure' up on the moors and into a woods to play some games.  This afternoon, we split into two groups to do some low adventure activities which included wriggling through tunnels in streams and swinging from ropes.

Tuesday 8th October - Heatree Camp Day 2

After a breakfast of all we could eat - cereals, toast, fruit and yoghurt - we headed to do some raft building but not before kitting ourselves out in waterproofs.  We had a great time using barrels, poles and ropes to put together rafts.  Listening skills, determination and a whole lot of teamwork was needed.  Did the rain put us off?  Not at all - it just added to the fun!

This afternoon was spent learning learning bushcraft skills.  We got to try popcorn cooked on the fire, we toasted marshmallows, drank hot chocolate and ate biscuits... and built some dens!

Monday 7th October - Heatree Camp Day 1

We managed to dodge the rain during our afternoon activity which was 'Tamakale Island'.  Basically, pirates want the native birds that live on Tamakale Island but the birds have gone; leaving their eggs behind.  It was our job to work as small teams to complete challenges and be rewarded with the eggs.

Our evening meal was pitched just right - with a choice of either pasta and garlic bread or jacket potatoes followed by jelly and as much fresh fruit as we wanted.

w/e 4th October

Data packets?  Want to know what they are, please ask your child what they have been learning about in their computing lessons.

w/e 27th September

What is the chance of it raining?  What is the possibility of us winning the lottery?  In year 6, we have been recapping modal verbs and even had a go at creating a spectrum of them.

w/e 20th September

This week we have finished writing our biographies for Michael Morpurgo and have started anaylsing the features of a formal letter: in a few days, we hope to write our own.  In Maths, we have moved onto addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  Please ask your child about common factors and common multiples.

At the beginning of the week, some of our class took part in 'Bikeability'.  Well done to those who have passed and good luck for next week for those still yet to cycle off site and around Welton.  Thursday saw our nominees for class representatives put themselves forward with some excellent speeches.  At the time of writing this, the votes are still to be counted.  Good luck to our nominees!

w/e 13th September

What a great week in Eagle Class.  We have begun writing our biographies in English lessons and in Maths we are coming to the end of our place value unit.  Please ask your child how to multiply and divide by 10,100 and 1000.

In our music lessons we have been listening to and appraising 'happy songs', with a focus on 'Happy' by Pharrell Williams.  Our first swimming lesson was a success with everyone getting in and enjoying the water.

w/e 6th September

The children have settled well into the routines of year 6.  It has been lovely to see them re-group with their friends after the Summer break.  They have been focused and enthusiastic about their learning.

In Numeracy, we have been focusing on place value and have got to grips with the Gattegno chart.  Our Literacy lessons have used 'Kensuke's Kingdom' - our class book.  We have been introduced to the main characters and the adventure they are about to embark on.  As part of our writing we have analysed a biography and have begun focusing on some of the text level skills in order to begin writing our own biographies for Michael Morpurgo at the end of next week.
