It has certainly been an exciting and busy week here at Welton. The children have been settling into our new timetable, which now includes daily spelling lessons. We will no longer be conducting formal spelling tests on Fridays, as we are now focusing on teaching and applying spelling patterns consistently throughout the week.
Not only this, but the children have been adapting brilliantly to our new afternoon assemblies. We are incredibly proud of how well they have adjusted to this change in their routine.
Our theme for discussion this week has been collaboration—working together to strive for success. This value is vital for children and adults alike. Walking through the school, it has been wonderful to see this in action, whether it’s pupils working together to construct chairs in DT or supporting one another as a team in PE.
We have a very busy term ahead! We know keeping track of key dates can be a challenge, so please do continue to check the newsletter and the parent calendar regularly.
As always, our door is open. Learning is a true partnership, and we value the immense support you give your children in all aspects of their education. If you ever wish to chat, please do feel free to come in.
Finally, a huge "well done" to Holly in Wren Class, who received her Amazon voucher after winning the Reading Challenge raffle. It is fantastic to see that the love of reading is well and truly alive at Welton!
Thank you for your ongoing support. Have a lovely weekend.
Mr L :)
We had a wonderful start to the week on Monday when we were joined by the team from Dogs for Health. They visited to share the fascinating world of therapy dogs and what it takes to train a four-legged friend for such an important role.
Nellie’s "To-Do" List
Amy and Elsie introduced us to Nellie, who is currently working through a very busy socialisation schedule! To ensure she’s ready for her future career, Nellie has a goal of experiencing 100 different things before she reaches five months old. This includes:
Navigating trips on trains.
Visiting busy shops.
Getting used to loud noises and new environments.
Dog Etiquette & Safety
The children had a brilliant discussion about how to interact safely with Nellie. We learned two very important rules for when Nellie is on-site:
The "One Person" Rule: Only one person should be fussing or petting the dog at any given time to keep things calm.
The Frontal Approach: We always approach a dog face-on so they can see us coming and feel at ease.
Preparing for Nellie’s Arrival
As we prepare for Nellie to spend more time with us, we have a small favour to ask our school community. Please help us keep the site entirely litter-free to ensure the environment is safe and clean for her arrival.
What’s next? Over the coming weeks, Nellie will be visiting us after school hours to familiarise herself with the building and grounds. This is the first step in her official training with Dogs for Health and the Kennel Club.
We look forward to sharing plenty of "pupdates" on her progress soon!
We are looking forward to welcoming a group of Year 5 Spanish children and their teachers to Welton next week! They are travelling from Cordoba and are spending the week joining in with school activities and visiting the local area. Click here to see a short video of their visit preparations and here to see a video tour of their school. We are very excited to meet them particularly as a number of our children have already begun connecting with them as Pen Pals! Photos to follow next week!
A Huge Thank You to Our Incredible PTFA
At Welton, we are incredibly fortunate to have such a dedicated and passionate Parent, Teacher and Friends Association (PTFA). Their tireless efforts behind the scenes—and your fantastic support at every bake sale, fair, and event—make a world of difference to our school community.
We are thrilled to share some exciting news: thanks to the PTFA’s recent fundraising and your generous contributions, we are currently awaiting the arrival of 10 brand-new iPads! These devices will be a brilliant addition to our classrooms, providing our pupils with modern tools to enhance their digital skills and creative learning.
This simply wouldn't be possible without the hard work of the committee and the brilliant support from all our families. Thank you for helping us invest in our children’s future.
Save the Dates!
The PTFA has a wonderful calendar of events lined up for the remainder of the school year. Please see the key dates listed below. We hope to see as many families as possible getting involved—whether it’s by volunteering an hour of your time or simply coming along to enjoy the fun!
During the week of the 23rd March, we will be having our Parent/Carer Evenings. These will be an opportunity to discuss your child's progress and their next steps to help them be successful. On the 5th March, it is World Book Day. This year, we would love children to come dressed as their favourite book characters. On the day, we would like to do a book swap. Please could all children bring in a book that they have read and no longer want. We will then swap these in classes.
At the end of the day, we would like to invite parents in to share a story with their children. Please join us at 2:45 to find out what we have been up to on the day.
Many thanks for your continued support with reading.
At Welton, we are committed to providing our children with the best possible start in life. Regular school attendance is a huge part of that. When children are here, they aren’t just learning maths and English; they are building friendships, confidence, and routines that stay with them forever.
Why Attendance is Key
Research shows a direct link between high attendance and academic achievement:
The 90% Rule: An attendance rate of 90% might sound good, but it actually means your child misses half a day of school every week.
The Big Picture: Over a school year, 90% attendance adds up to four whole weeks of missed lessons.
Impact on Progress: Statistics show that pupils with no absence are 1.5 times more likely to achieve expected standards at the end of Key Stage 2 compared to those who miss even 10% of school.
Reporting Absences
We completely understand that children get ill, and sometimes staying at home is the best thing for their recovery. However, to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all our pupils, we require your cooperation with our reporting procedures:
Important: If your child is unable to attend, please phone the school office every day of their absence before 8:30 am.
It is vital that we hear from you daily. If we do not receive a phone call or a valid reason for absence, we are required by local authority guidelines to code the child’s absence as unauthorised. Consistent communication helps us ensure every child is safe and accounted for.
Thank You
We would like to extend a huge thank you to the majority of our families who communicate so effectively with us. Your ongoing support is instrumental in raising both attendance levels and overall standards at Welton. Together, we can ensure our children reach their full potential.
Nursery invoices should now be on Arbor Pay. Please email vedwards@welton.mnsp.org.uk if there are any issues. Paper copies will be coming out next week.
We are delighted to invite you to our Mothers and Others Afternoon on Friday, 13th March.
Please join us from 2:00 pm to 3:15 pm for a special afternoon of activities as we celebrate our mums, grandmothers, aunties, and the many incredible women who support our children every day. It promises to be a wonderful session filled with creativity and connection. We look forward to seeing you there!
Welton Primary School Nursery invites you to our Forest School Morning on Friday 20th March, 2026. We are welcoming children aged 2–4 and their parents to join us for a morning of outdoor exploration from 09:00 to 10:30.
It’s a wonderful chance to get stuck into nature, so please remember to bring wellies and a coat! If you would like to attend, please email the office at office@welton.mnsp.org.uk to let us know you are coming and to highlight any dietary requirements you may have.
On Wednesday morning, Y3 and Y4 were put through their paces with Brad from the Schools Sports Partnership. Brad led both classes through a 45 minute workout that combined cardio and core muscle exercises. Brad commented on the excellent listening skills and commitment the children had to completing the exercises. Needless to say we had some very hot and sweaty children at the end of it! Well done Y3 and 4!
We are really excited that Welton has been chosen to be part of an exciting initiative to encourage more children and their families to walk to school. WOW – the walk to school challenge is delivered by Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, to help as many children as possible experience the benefits of walking or wheeling to school.
The pupil-led challenge enables children to self-report how they get to school every day. If they travel actively (walk/wheel, cycle, scoot, ‘Park and Stride’ or hop off) at least once a week, for a month, they get rewarded with a badge. It’s that simple!
What are the benefits of walking to school?
• Children feel happier and healthier
• They arrive at school refreshed and ready to learn
• Helps reduce congestion and pollution at the school gates
What if we can’t walk to school?
If driving, ‘Park and Stride’ to help your child earn their WOW badges. Park at least ten minutes away from the school and walk or wheel the remaining journey. If using public transport, hop off at least ten minutes away and walk the rest of the way (recorded as ‘other’ on the WOW Travel Tracker).
What is a WOW badge? As we are starting a little later in March, there will be 4 badges to collect for this academic year. Each badge has been designed by a pupil as part of our annual WOW Badge Design Competition. A new badge can be earned every month if pupils walk/wheel, cycle, scoot, ‘Park and Stride’ or hop off at least once a week.
WOW 2025/26 encourages pupils to Walk with Joy, with badges depicting everything from jumping in puddles to painting. The badges are made in Cornwall from material that was otherwise destined for landfill, including fridge trays, plastic plates and yoghurt pot off-cuts.

On Thursday Y3, 4 and 5 had a visitor from the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution. We were able to handle artefacts from the stone age (or replicas of!) and then had a go at carving our own arrow heads out of soap! We had to use resilience as carving soap is tricky, but we made some fantastic arrow or hammer heads.
Take a look at our class pages below!
This spring Stagecoach Midsomer Norton will be performing the incredible Matilda the Musical.
We're so excited that our talented students will get to step into the world of Roald Dahl's beloved story. This show is all about bravery, creativity, and standing up for what's right. If you know a child who might like to get involved, we'd love to hear from you. Enrolments for our next term are now OPEN.
Classes run every Saturday morning at Welton Primary School starting on the 10th of Jan. The performance will be on the 22nd April at the Dragonfly Theatre. Visit our website or give Principal Charlie a call on 07435050703 to see if there are spaces for your child's age group and book a 2-week trial today!
Thank you 🙂
