As we head towards the final weeks of term, it's fantastic to see the energy and hard work that is taking place across our whole school community to ensure we end the year in style! I want to say a massive thank you to all who came and supported our workforce evening after school on Wednesday this week. It was absolutely brilliant to see so many of you giving up your time to help improve our school environment for the children!
I also want to extend a huge thank you for your incredible commitment to school attendance. I'm delighted to see that our school's overall attendance percentage remains above the national average which is a fantastic achievement and a direct result of your dedication to getting your children into school, on time, every day. Regular attendance is absolutely essential to provide the consistent learning, routines, and social experiences that children need to succeed. To help us maintain these high standards, please keep the following in mind in the final weeks of term. If a child is not at school it is essential that you telephone us each day to let us know the reason why. As you know, under the Midsomer Norton Schools Partnership (MNSP) Attendance Policy we are unable to authorise term-time absences so please ensure you follow this policy closely during these final few weeks of the school year. We have all worked so hard to ensure attendance is a real priority so it would be a real shame for our brilliant attendance figures to drop at this late stage.
As shared in our recent Instagram post, we are absolutely thrilled to announce that we have achieved the 'School Games Gold Mark Award' for this academic year. This is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012 and facilitated by the Youth Sports Trust. We have been recognised for our commitment to the development of sporting competitions across our school and into our local community. We are incredibly proud to have our success recognised on this scale so a massive well done to all the children and staff who made this happen. I also want to extend a huge thank you to you, our parents and carers, for being such superb supporters and dedicated taxis for our sports fixtures! A special mention must go to Mrs Berry and the brilliant team behind the scenes for pulling our sport together so successfully!
As we head into the final weeks, please could I also ask for your support in maintaining our high standards of school uniform. We have noticed a number of children coming to school either not wearing the correct clothes or wearing incorrect footwear. Wearing the correct school uniform fosters a sense of pride, belonging, and equality among our pupils as well as helping to ensure positive attitudes and behaviour. Even though the summer holidays are in sight, it's important that we keep our standards high right until the end of the last day. Please ensure your child arrives each day in the correct school uniform, including the correct school shoes. Thank you for your cooperation with this.
Don't forget - there are still plenty of exciting community events to look forward to over the coming weeks (please see the key dates section above). Most notably, please make sure to put the date in your diary for our fantastic 'Welton Summer Fayre' on Friday 3rd July! It's already shaping up to be another brilliant fundraising event, and we cannot wait to see you all there to support the school. And the sun will be shining!
Let's work together to finish the school year just as strongly as we started it, ensuring every child finishes their current year group with the best possible momentum!
Thank you for your continued support, Mr Snell :)
Unfortunately, due to numbers, we had to cancel this.
If you have any feedback, on maybe why you couldn't attend, please speak to one of the PTFA members. Thank you so much.
It was absolutely lovely to see our school community come together this week for our Workforce Evening. The turnout was fantastic, and there was a wonderful buzz of teamwork in the air as parents, families, and staff rolled up their sleeves to brighten up our school spaces. From weeding and trimming hedges to giving our outdoor areas a fresh lease of life, your hard work has made a massive difference to the environment our children enjoy every day. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and generously gave up their time to help out—we are incredibly grateful for your continued support!
A visiting snake in Nightingale Class
We had the pleasure of a visiting snake in Nightingale Class today. Kitty’s mum brought in their pet corn snake: Rhubarb. She was a beautiful snake. The children could clearly see her dry scaly skin and they could see that she was very active as it was warm in the room. They asked super questions and were very respectful.
The Year 2s had a fantastic time visiting Longleat on Wednesday. They found many different types and species of animals on their trip. They all liked the train ride!
Over the past two days, we have been celebrating the International Day of Play, highlighting why freely chosen play is essential for our children's development, health, and happiness.
Here is how play drives everything we do:
Why Play Matters
Play isn't just a break from lessons—it is learning. It builds resilience, sparks creativity, and boosts mental wellbeing, helping pupils return to the classroom focused and ready to thrive.
Our OPAL programme has transformed lunchtimes. By using "loose parts" like crates, tyres, and cardboard, children are engineering dens, managing safe risks, and collaborating brilliantly in child-led adventures. If you can continue to donate things, we would greatly appreciate it.
In the Early Years, play is the foundation of the curriculum. Whether digging in the mud kitchen or role-playing, our youngest pupils naturally master vital communication, maths, and motor skills through exploration.
Unstructured play seamlessly bridges into sports at Welton. The teamwork, agility, and fair play learned in PE lessons thrive on the playground, with pupils organising everything from football matches to skipping challenges.
Thank you to our fantastic staff and families for supporting a play-rich environment. Let’s keep prioritising play every day!
From September, we are excited to be partnering with Jamie Woodland's Black Belt Academy to provide opportunities for your children to learn martial arts, alongside developing respect, global awareness, responsibility and self-defence. As teachers, we feel that the values taught in these disciplines align perfectly with our own school ethos and we highly recognise their benefits.
We will be offering weekly lessons for children from Year 1 to Year 6.
The sessions will run on Mondays from 3:15pm to 4:15pm, led by instructors from the academy. The cost will be £5 per session, and payment should be made via Arbor Pay.
To make this club viable, we require a minimum of 10 children to sign up before we can give it the green light.
If you are interested, please complete the form below by next Friday so I can update Jamie and his team on whether the club will go ahead.

But this time for a different cause. Year 6 are in the midst of rehearsing our end of year play and are looking to raise some money to go towards this. They will be running the snack shack every week at break times on Mondays and Fridays throughout this term. Healthy snacks will be on offer, including watermelon, pineapple and berries. Everything will be 50p. Don't forget to bring your coins!
We are thrilled to announce that children’s author and animator Pete Bailey will be visiting us on the 25th June to share his brand-new sci-fi adventure novel, Keeper of the Earth: Light in the Shadows (perfect for ages 8+).
Pete has an incredible background in animation, having worked on Doctor Who, The Sarah Jane Adventures for the BBC, and with Aardman Animations on The Pirates! movie.
What’s happening on the day?
An Exciting Assembly: The children will watch a video showcasing the book's illustrations, enjoy live readings, and take part in a Q&A session.
Classroom Workshops Year 4 and 5: Interactive sessions featuring age-appropriate readings, drawing demonstrations with tips and tricks, and a fun drawing/writing activity.
How to buy the book & join the 'Keeper Club'
Signed and personalised copies of the book will be available to buy directly from Pete at the school for £9 (cash or card). Alternatively, you can order in advance via his website, and any books ordered after the event will be delivered to the school the following week.
Every book purchase includes an invitation to join the Keeper Club, giving children access to a "top-secret" area of Pete's website packed with bonus chapters, activity sheets, and behind-the-scenes sketches.
To find out more, order a copy, or explore his work, visit www.petebaileybooks.co.uk.
With the exception of YouTube, WhatsApp has always been one of the most popular messaging apps, including for children under 13. This has always been a concern for a lot of different reasons, but out of the blue it seems that Meta have now created a parent-managed service which is really good.
Similar to other parent-managed accounts, a parent will pair their device/account to the child's device/account which then gives a lot of flexibility such as:
No 'view once' messages.
No location sharing.
Messages and group invites from unknown contacts sent to the parent for approval.
Parent notifications, such as new contact added.
Please take a look at upcoming events! We look forward to seeing you at these in the coming weeks and months!
