Grade 6

Organization and SEL

Grade six students are placed in a classroom that is grouped with other grade six classrooms to form a “house.” Students are taught by each of the teachers in the house. They are grouped heterogeneously so that in any one classroom, there are individuals working at different learning levels and rates. Grade six teachers are the key figures in all subject areas and are responsible for providing instruction to suit the various needs and learning styles of the children. Additionally, students engage in a social/emotional program, called “SEED,” that provides time each month for 6th grade students to discuss topics appropriate for their transition to middle school. It is a place for them to get to know their peers and adults in a non-academic setting as well as time to think about new and challenging issues. Topics include study skills and resilience, friendship, digital citizenship and ally behavior. Skills include: self management, self awareness and responsibility decision-making.

SEED also provides a forum to communicate and honor several of our core values including:

  • Respect for human differences

  • Caring and cooperative relationships

  • Commitment to community
